Summary

The Emergency Department Unit Host is responsible for providing coverage for various patient and family needs. The Michigan Medicine classification for this position is Unit Host.

Responsibilities*
  • Partner with the Triage team to greet arriving patients, families and visitors. Work as a Unit Host to assist arriving patients, families and visitors.
  • Offer visitors option to receive text messages, process consents and set up as indicated.
  • Document visitors into MiChart Visitor Log.
  • Provide information regarding UMH and Emergency Department services.
  • Orient families and visitors to UH Lobby waiting room area or treatment room areas.
  • Escort visitors into ED treatment areas following established visitor guidelines.
  • Serve as a liaison between patients/families and ED staff.
  • Routinely check with visitors & waiting patients to meet their comfort needs.  Provide for personal comfort items, ie. pillows, warm blankets, phone chargers.
  • Deliver phone messages to patients and visitors and facilitate return phone calls.
  • Ensure patients and visitors have a clean waiting room environment by maintaining the general neatness of the waiting area, paging Environmental Services as needed.
  • Provide for the safety of patients and visitors by removing potential obstacles from ED hallways.
  • Ensure effective flow of information to patients and families/visitors by promptly relaying questions or concerns to the appropriate ED staff.
  • Assure smooth transition of visitors from the ED to other areas within the hospital complex.

  • Required Qualifications*
  • 18 years of age or older
  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of customer service experience.
  • Team player with ability to communicate effectively with patients and families, as well as staff and faculty, courteously, respectfully, and confidentially at all times
  • Demonstrated effective listening skills and excellent interpersonal communication skills to interpret and identify customer needs or concerns.
  • Demonstrated record of excellent attendance, flexibility and dependability.
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Basic computer skills

  • Desired Qualifications*
  • One year of experience in an ED, clinic, or other health care settings.

  • Background Screening

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
