Job Summary

**Multiple positions**

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) receives daily assignments and functions under the supervision of the Registered Nurse to carry out direct patient care responsibilities. All patient care team members act to meet patient needs and learn new skills to achieve quality patient care and customer service.

Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, other staff, and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to age-specific needs and cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback in a professional manner.


Required Qualifications

  • Six months recent direct patient care experience in an acute hospital setting
  • High School diploma; or equivalent experience
  • Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to safely and effectively monitor up to 12 patients at one time (utilizing audio/visual remote monitoring equipment)
  • Ability to work effectively within a team
  • Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description
  • Willingness to be taught/learn new skills
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition and subtraction)
  • Ability to organize and effectively set priorities
  • Ability to carry out duties of the first responder in emergency situations
  • Basic computer keyboard skills and general PC knowledge
  • Successful completion of Medical Center Patient Care Assistant training
  • Well organized and detail-oriented with the ability to work independently and under pressure
  • Efficiency in multitasking and ability to prioritize simultaneous situations
  • The flexibility to work and orient at all UCSF locations 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in remote monitoring
  • Multilingual skill 
  • Certified Nursing Assistant or equivalent experience
  • Recent Float Pool experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology appropriate to the responsibilities of the job
