Job Summary

The Patient Care Assistant (PCA) receives daily assignments and functions under the supervision of the Registered Nurse to carry out direct patient care responsibilities. All patient care team members act to meet patient needs and learn new skills to achieve quality patient care and customer service.

Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, other staff, and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to age-specific needs and cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback in a professional manner.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

 

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Surgical / Oncology unit cares for a variety of oncology and surgical patients including those with urological, gynecological, colorectal, head and neck, liver and pancreatic diseases. Complex wound care, ostomy care and tracheotomy care make patient education a priority for both the patients and their caregivers after discharge. Multiple opportunities exist for nurses to coordinate innovative treatment modalities for the oncology patient population on this unit. Nurses work in an area where a dynamic, interdisciplinary, supportive and healing approach is the focus. This unit provides the opportunity to work in a cutting edge environment were excellent care can be provided in a patient and family focused setting. Chemotherapy certification is available and is required for the staff who administer chemotherapy.


Required Qualifications

  • Ability to work effectively within a team 
  • Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description 
  • Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing 
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition and subtraction) 
  • Ability to organize and effectively set priorities 
  • Ability to carry out duties of first responder in emergency situations
  • Successful completion of Medical Center Patient Care Assistant training
  • Willingness to be taught/learn new skills
  • Basic computer skills 
  • ​The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations
