The University of North Georgia is currently accepting applications for a Part-TIme Temporary Summer 2024 STEM Faculty Mentor - High School Students' Summer Program on the Gainesville campus. The Institute for Environmental & Spatial Analysis (IESA) seeks to hire six (6) faculty in the broadly defined area of geosciences and STEM for the summer 2024 Shadowing Research and Mentorship Program (SRMP). SRMP is part of a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded grant (# 75190) project titled  "Engaging High School STEM and Special Education Teachers in Innovative Geoscience Teaching, Learning, and Research Environments". The mission of the SRMP is to inspire the next generation of geoscientists in the Georgia region by faciliting high school students' research experience and introduction to geoscience career opportunities. Twelve (12) high school students will be selected for a summer shadowing program held for two weeks on UNG's Gainesville campus in Summer 2024 - June 17th to 28th. During this program, studnets will be placed in three (3) cohorts of four (4) students based on theor research interests and they will be assigned to two faculty mentors to observe, assist, and participate in research projects. Each faculty mentor will receive a stipend of $1000 after completetion of the two week program. Faculty mentors must develop and submit a statement of their research projects.

  • Co-lead, facilitate, and manage a geo- STEM related research project.
  • Mentors are required to attend any introductory meeting, safety sessions, UNG's compliance training related to working with non-enrolled minors and follow the guidelines throughout the duration of the program.
  • Mentors will spend a minimum of 3 hours on 4 mandatory face-to-face meeting days (June 17, 21, 24, and 28) and an additional 10 hours during the remaining non mandatory days of working with the students in a group or individually. Daily log of activities with students is required.
  • Mentors will use the SRMP D2L page to communicate with students and post readings and assignments. Mentors will also be responsible for responding to students' questions in D2L regarding the projects within 24 hours.
  • Mentors will identify student objectives and learning outcomes associated with their projects. Mentors will create assessment(s) to measure student outcomes.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Commitment to teaching and mentoring a diverse population of students, student-centered, active-learning, and inquiry-based approaches. 
  • High-quality oral and written communication skills.
  • Master or PhD degree in any STEM field; Geosciences field preferred.
  • Experience teaching and mentoring high school or undergraduate college students.
