The Department of Biology is a large, unified department with strong undergraduate degrees, nationally ranked graduate programs, world-class research spanning the breadth of biological questions and experimental systems, and a passion for science outreach.


Our premiere outreach programs - The Jim Holland Summer Enrichment Program (SEP), Summer Science Research Program (SSRP), and Research Initiative in STEM Education (RISE) - are exciting opportunities for underrepresented high school students to be introduced to various scientific subjects from microbiology to plant biology through series of lectures, hands-on laboratory experiences, scientific research, and/or STEM career and college training. Program activities are led by a dynamic and skilled team of Indiana University faculty members and Indiana high school teachers.

Counselors serve an important function for each of our 3 programs as they physically reside with and closely supervise student participants in the dormitory. We are seeking counselors for each program.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Must be available to work for the entire program - from staff training to move out day.
  • Participates in student check-in and orientation.
  • Interacts with the students and serves as a positive role model. Adheres to program policies, rules, regulations, and procedures Distributes welcome packets and associated program items.
  • Escorts students to/from all activities.
  • Supervises student participants during meals, free time, special events, evening activities, and overnight. Plans, prepares, and leads social and recreational activities.
  • Enforces good behavior at all times (including in the dorm).
  • Responds appropriately to safety and behavior issues and address concerns to the head counselor and/or program director.
  • Enforces curfew.

 

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in any field

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in education, natural sciences, or a related field

WORK EXPERIENCE

Preferred

  • Background and/or experience with school environments, educating students in a science field
  • Previous experience working with science outreach programs and underrepresented students highly desirable

LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Preferred

  • CPR Certified

SKILLS

Required

  • High level of responsibility, punctuality, and accountability
  • Ability to complete tasks in a productive and proactive manner

1 application is good for all 3 programs.

Counselors must not have any other commitments during the scheduled dates of programs to which you are assigned unless approved by the program director in advance. If chosen, you must also attend a counselor orientation 1 day prior to the start of the program(s). 

Free room and board and $600 per week, per program. Work hours are the dates of each program.

  • Dates of the Research Initiative for STEM Education {RISE) are June 16-June 28, 2024.
  • Dates of the Summer Science Research Program {SSRP) are July 7-14, 2024.  (Staff Training: July 6)
  • Dates of the Jim Holland Summer Enrichment Program {SEP) are July 14-19, 2024. (Staff Training: July 13)
