Department Architecture Model Shop
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The COA Model Shop is a 10,000 SQ FT facility that primarily serves Architecture students, faculty, staff, as well as IPRO courses that include students from a variety of other IIT colleges. The Model Shop provides the equipment, space, software, training and supervision to help students and faculty design and fabricate architectural models, furniture, and larger scale constructions. Maintained and Supervised by a Shop Manager, a Digital Fabrication Manager, and a Digital Technician. After being authorized, students design and fabricate their projects with shop education, supervisory guidance and the help of one of our 15-20 Student Workers.
COMMUNICATIONS
This position requires a person comfortable with written and verbal communication. The audience will include students, staff, faculty, other educational institutions and external entrepreneurial companies.
CUSTOMER SERVICE
This position requires a person who is patient, considerate and enthusiastic about helping students learn. It also requires a person who is professional, approachable, and able to interact easily with faculty and external contacts in establishing mutually beneficial relationships.
Special Schedule Requirements
Shop Technician will work a modified schedule to allow evening, night and weekend shop supervision and mentoring. During times of heavy shop use, the schedule may shift both earlier and later. Over Summer and During Winter break, the schedule changes to Monday – Friday 9am-5pm.

Qualifications


Education & Experience
Some College, Bachelor’s in STEM field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education & experience. Minimum two (2) years working in a wood shop, machine shop, or makerspace environment.
Knowledge & Skills
A good candidate may have varying levels of proficiency in the following skill sets. Candidates must have strong woodshop skills, be interested in learning / expanding into other skill sets, and have a positive, outgoing personality.

Interpersonal Skills:

Experienced in:
- Shop safety procedures and comfortable with enforcement of safety policies
- Advising users on the proper use of woodshop tools and offering guidance to novice users.
Comfortable with:
- Mentoring and assisting undergraduate and graduate students, staff, and faculty
- Consulting on research and academic projects
- Cleaning / maintaining work environment
Technical Skills:
Proficient in:
- Proper woodshop methods and tool use. Core tool set includes: table saw, bandsaw, drill press, miter saw, disc / belt sander, jointer, planer.
- AutoCAD, Inventor, Solidworks, Rhino or equivalent
Familiar with:
- CNC tool-path generation, working from technical drawings and computer aided design
- Proper machining methods and laser cutting protocol
- Maintaining, calibrating and repairing machine shop and prototyping equipment

Possible oversight of student workers.

Physical Environment and Requirements
Laboratory environment: Exposure to dust, chemicals and noise typical in a machine shop and woodworking shop. This position will require standing 90% of the time to perform shop work and 10% of the time carrying and moving objects and materials weighing up to 50 lbs.
