Job Description

The Pieraut lab at the University of Nevada, Reno is seeking a part-time Research Assistant. The main focus of our research is to identify cellular and molecular mechanisms regulating brain plasticity. The research relies on in-vivo studies using mouse models. The candidate will manage lab business and projects (50% time) and provide support for our mouse colony (50% time).

Responsibilities

General lab technician work including but not limited to:

  • Serve as primary manager of mouse breeding colony, in consultation with PI

    • Duties will include optimizing mouse breeding schedules; breeding, weaning, obtaining genetic samples (tail biopsy), collecting tissue samples.

    • PCR genotyping of mice, including database management. Will adhere to all animal care and welfare regulations

    • Participate in animal care and research training

    • Effectively communicate with university animal care personnel to assure proper animal welfare

    • Comply with regulations
       

  • Perform experimental analysis in consultation with PI

    • Become proficient in techniques used in molecular and histological analysis of experimental tissue samples

    • Techniques will include histological analysis using immunolabeling of tissue sections (mouse transcardiac perfusion and brain extraction, vibratome sectioning, and staining); Fluorescence microscopy, image collection, and quantitative analysis

    • Molecular biology; construct, cloning and prep of expression plasmids

    • Selection and analysis of experimental material
       

  • Maintain daily lab notebook

  • Submit written and electronic records

Required Qualifications

  • Candidate must have experience in scientific research

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidate has a Bachelor of Science

  • Candidate with knowledge in Microsoft Excel; Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) is encouraged to apply
