Experienced, part-time, flexible remote meteorologist needed to prepare, present and deliver multimedia weather content for WUFT-TV, WRUF-TV, WUFT-FM, WRUF-AM/FM, FPREN (the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network) and associated websites and mobile apps.  This is an incredible opportunity to create and deliver impactful hurricane and other severe and significant weather content in every market in Florida through the most unique emergency alerting and public safety initiative in America.  You’ll play a critical role in delivering important hurricane and other severe weather updates and writing weather and public safety-focused stories on public radio and television stations in every market in Florida (Miami-Ft. Lauderdale, Tampa-St. Petersburg, Orlando, Ft. Myers, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Pensacola, etc).  The position will assist the Chief Meteorologist in training, coaching, and mentoring students enrolled in the Broadcast Meteorology program. This is a unique position, and the ideal candidate must have strong oral and visual presentation skills, be an engaging writer, possess the desire to mentor or coach others, and have an unquestionable understanding of meteorology and climatology as it relates to Florida.

About the Opportunity

The part-time, remote Meteorologist will prepare and present forecast products to be distributed on radio, television, station websites and mobile or social media applications. These products are not limited to strictly forecasting, but also to any element necessary to ensure the weather content provided by the University of Florida Division of Media Properties is of the highest quality and constantly updated to maintain relevancy in the marketplace for the entire state of Florida, where WUFT/FPREN partner stations depend on relevant severe weather and public safety content.

Interpret data, reports, maps, photographs, or charts to predict long or short-range weather conditions, using computer models and knowledge of climate theory, physics, and mathematics. The successful candidate may be asked to assist the Director and Chief Meteorologist and Senior Meteorologist in mentoring a group of student interns/forecasters in their development and progress. Coach and train students how to produce and present a weather forecast for television, radio and social media. Teach students how to interpret weather reports or maps for analysis, distribution, or use in weather broadcasts, using computer graphics.

Assist the Chief Meteorologist in the preparation of weather content to be distributed on radio, television, the internet and mobile or social media applications. Prepare weather reports or maps for analysis, distribution, or use in weather broadcasts for the Chief Meteorologist. Gather data from sources such as surface or upper air stations, satellites, weather bureaus, or radar for use in meteorological reports.

The College of Journalism’s Division of Media Properties, includes seven broadcast stations, allowing students from throughout the College to gain experience in a competitive broadcast and multimedia environment. More than 200 students work in news, sports, production, management positions, web design, promotions and advertising for the radio and television stations each semester.

Expected Salary:

$30 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree and 2 years of professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, geography or communications with some coursework in meteorology.  Experience/training should include a background in the latest weather graphics/display units from Baron, Weather Central or WSI, live Doppler radar/storm display units, and forecasting/tracking of severe and tropical weather systems.  Experience as a broadcast meteorologist/weathercaster with experience in presenting weather forecasts and communicating with personnel from other broadcast markets or the public in Spanish.  Accreditation with the National Weather Association or Atmospheric Meteorological Society is preferred.
