Position Description

NYU Tulsa is seeking a local, part-time instructor to teach “Revitalizing the American City: Challenges and Strategies for Vibrant and Inclusive Development” for Spring 2025 (mid-January to mid-May). The course is sponsored by NYU’s College of Arts and Science and the Department of Sociology. The course is taught in English, and there are 15 in-person instructional weeks. Students will be a mix of upperclassmen. The schedule will be discussed with the final candidates. The instructor will design the course, prepare for all classes, teach, grade student work, and hold at least one office hour per week. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their teaching experience. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life at the NYU Tulsa campus.

Course Details

Using Tulsa as a case study and laboratory, this course considers the profound challenges facing so many American cities — from hollowed-out downtowns and the decline or departure of key employers to cycles of poverty and inequality, aging populations and infrastructure, residential segregation, “brain drain,” and public disinvestment — alongside efforts to achieve economic and cultural reinvigoration, inclusive growth and innovation, and broad-based prosperity. The course pairs an analytical examination of critical urban challenges with a consideration of how public, private, and nonprofit sector leaders can use policy levers, economic and neighborhood development initiatives, community engagement, urban design, arts and culture initiatives, philanthropy, entrepreneurship, and other tools to drive urban revitalization and promote community well-being.

Qualifications

In some instances, significant professional expertise and experience in the relevant field may be a suitable substitute for teaching experience. Salary will be based on equivalent part-time faculty rates for the course and location, and other terms and conditions will be discussed with the successful applicant. The successful candidate should have the right to live and work in the United States prior to appointment.
