Description

The Social Sciences Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago is now accepting applications for a part-time Lecturer to teach Jewish Civilization during the 2022-23 academic year. Jewish Civilization is a three-quarter sequence in the University’s Civilization Studies program that explores the development of Jewish culture and tradition from its ancient beginnings through its rabbinic and medieval transformations to its modern manifestations. Through investigation of primary texts, students acquire a broad overview of Jew, Judaism, and Jewishness while reflection in greater depth on major themes, ideas, and events in Jewish history. The successful candidate will teach between one and four classes, depending on curricular needs, in the 2022-23 academic year. Responsibilities include preparing and teaching a seminar-style course, holding regularly scheduled office hours, preparing and grading assignments, and attending staff meetings. The per-course salary is $7,319, and the position is not benefits eligible.

The terms and conditions of employment for this position are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) and the University.


Qualifications

The position requires a Ph.D. in a social sciences or humanities area relevant to the curriculum. Experience teaching at the university or four-year college level is required.
