Job Description

The Department of Natural Sciences at the College of Arts, Sciences & Education (CASE) is committed to incorporate student-centered learning practices and programs in the curriculum and train the students with the essential skills to succeed in their respective fields. The department invites applications for a part-time (50% or less) lab coordinator. The lab coordinator is assigned the responsibilities of maintaining an inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment in the various laboratories used for teaching and research in biology. The lab coordinator will teach some of the labs and coordinate all laboratory activities with faculty, administration, and students; and supervise student workers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Responsible for coordination of lab activities with students, faculty, and staff.
  • Developing and maintaining inventory of supplies and materials needed for teaching labs.
  • Coordinating the ordering, storage, and maintenance of laboratory equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Working closely with the university safety office and faculty for lab safety and chemical hygiene issues.
  • Maintaining laboratory facility in safe, clean, and organized manner.
  • Developing and implementing policies, procedures, and standards for lab operations to ensure the efficiency, effectiveness, and quality control of the laboratory and compliance with federal, state, and university regulations and standards.
  • Responsible for teaching 2 lab sections in biology per semester- including summer.
  • Other duties as assigned by the college dean or department chair.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES :

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of related experience.
  • Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.
  • Ability to identify, assess, and solve problems.
  • Ability to organize, multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding.
  • Ability to lift light objects under 50 pounds.

  • Work outside normal office hours and/or work on weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in biology or closely related discipline.
  • Two (2) or more years of related experience.
  • Experience in coordinating and teaching labs for biology and at undergraduate level.

Other Requirements

  • Periodic work outside of normal office hours.
  • This position does not provide health insurance or other benefits.

This position generally supervises student workers.
