Recruitment/Posting Title Part-Time Instructor, Physics, Fall 2021
Department SASN - Physics
Salary Salary per Credit
Posting Summary
The Department of Physics, School of Arts and Sciences-Newark, Rutgers University-Newark (RU-N), is seeking part-time instructors for the Fall 2021 semester. We are recruiting part-time instructors trained or interested in being trained in the Investigative Science Learning Environment (ISLE) approach to join our introductory physics teaching team. In Fall 2019 we worked with Dr. Eugenia Etkina to transform all our introductory physics classes (lecture, lab and recitation) to follow the ISLE philosophy. Students observe a phenomenon, propose explanations for the phenomenon, test explanations in testing experiments, and apply constructed knowledge. We help our students build knowledge in processes similar to how physicists build knowledge. Our part-time instructors are an essential part of our teaching team. They teach labs and problem-solving sessions in the course. We offer summer training, a pre-semester workshop, and run weekly training meetings where all instructors become familiar with the curriculum. The introductory courses are led by three faculty engaged in Physics Education Research (PER). We value part-time instructors as key to our students’ success and we support your professional development. Past part-time instructors have been graduate students in physics education who have conducted dissertation research, joined university faculty, or returned to the K12 classroom. We support your growth as we seek to improve physics education at RU-N and beyond. The position has flexible hours. If you are a high school physics teacher, you can be a part-time instructor in the RU-N Physics Departments.
The successful candidate will cover the full range of duties associated with teaching, including, but not limited to, preparing course material with the instructional team; creating and posting a course syllabus with the instructional team; presenting material during the assigned course times; holding office hours and providing appropriate out-of-class time for students; responding to student e-mails; conducting and grading assessments of students through assignments, exams, and other means, in a timely manner; and submitting final grades. Course appointments may require instruction during the day, on evenings, on weekends, off campus, online, or remotely.
