Doctoral mentors work with mentees to ensure dissertations are consistent with the prevailing standards for scholarship in the discipline by providing direction, supportive interaction, and a positive mentee experience. We expect Capella mentors to adhere to Capella's mentoring philosophy, which describes excellence across three key mentoring domains: Research & Practice, Capella Process and Tools, and Interpersonal Skills. All mentors are expected to demonstrate competence in these domains as measured by the following criteria:
Research and Practice
• Understands the end-to-end design, execution, and completion of research or professional practice projects in the discipline.
• Evaluate & grade mentee work accurately.
• Demonstrates knowledge of ethical principles, standards, and regulations.
 

Process and Tools
• Accurately and effectively implements Capella policies and procedures.
• Demonstrates a commitment to provide timely feedback and support to mentees.
• Uses required tools to assist mentees.
 

Interpersonal Skills
• Interacts with others in a practical, respectful, and timely manner.
• Promotes a positive, collaborative relationship with mentees.
• Manages committee or secondary reviewer through effective and timely communication.

Essential Duties

Following are the specific accountabilities expected for faculty in the primary areas of responsibility:

  • Mentors apply their research experience and knowledge to the design and analysis of research of their mentee's dissertation project
  • Mentors apply their in-depth knowledge of IRB standards, regulations, and processes at each stage of the dissertation and consult with expert colleagues, related literature, and other available school resources when research methods/design or professional practice project questions or concerns arise.
  • Mentors ensure the dissertation's efficient administration process by implementing Capella policies and procedures and managing the doctoral committee through timely and effective communication about progress, feedback, or concerns.
  • Mentors use the dissertation course room to facilitate discussions with mentees to ensure ongoing progress toward successfully completing the dissertation.
  • Mentors review and critique mentee work, provide relevant, substantive feedback.
  • Mentors facilitate/participate in doctoral committee meetings.
  • Mentors are active in the dissertation course room at least 4 times per week.
  • Mentors respond to mentee inquiries within 48 hours.
  • Mentors return graded assignments within 7 calendar days from submission, including quality feedback.
  • Mentors provide appropriate feedback using scoring guide tools, coaching, and reinforcement of effective critical thinking.
  • Mentors report at-risk mentees to appropriate school staff; encourage mentee participation in End of Course Evaluations (EOCE) forms; adhere to quality standards in line with the department, school, and university norms.
  • Mentors also serve as committee members on dissertation chaired by other Mentors and are expected to respond to committee inquiries within 48 hours; return dissertation products within 7 calendar days with substantive feedback.
  • Mentors provide appropriate feedback using scoring guide tools, coaching, and reinforcement of effective critical thinking; and adhere to quality standards in line with the department, school, and university norms.
  • Mentors engage with all parties (mentees, committee members, leads, Program Director, Faulty Director, and Research Director, Deans, and staff) in a positive, collaborative, respectful, and timely manner, and assume positive intent from others in all interactions.

Performance Criteria

  • Mentors will be assessed based upon their demonstration of personal drive to accomplish goals and consistently meet expectations. Performance criteria for mentors include: (1) Evidence of high-quality mentee interactions as demonstrated through End of Course Evaluations (EOCE). (2) Quality of mentee products as evidenced by deferrals at key review points (IRB, School, Doctoral Publications, and/or Dean level review). (3) Adherence to best practices in the course room, as evidenced by completing and grading based on the learner's approved Quarterly Plan of Action. (4) Responsiveness in the course room as evidenced by course presence and assignment turnaround time. (5) Responsiveness to feedback from the Program Director, Faculty Director, Research Director, and colleagues supporting the mentoring process.

Work Experience

  • Minimum three years professional counseling experience
  • Experience in guiding and supervising doctoral level social science research or professional practice projects, as appropriate per discipline strongly preferred
  • Experience in graduate-level teaching; online teaching experience preferred
  • Experience with scholarly writing and use of APA current edition
  • A record of scholarship

Education

  • An earned doctoral degree from an accredited institution in Counselor Education and Supervision, preferably from a CACREP- accredited program; or employment as a full-time faculty member in a counselor education program for a minimum of one full academic year before July 1, 2013

Certifications, licenses, and registration

  • Active professional counseling license (e.g. LPC, LMHC, LPCC, etc.) or active National Certified Counselor (NCC) credential
  • Approved Counseling Supervisor (ACS) credential preferred

  • Must be able to travel occasionally within the US should a business need arise (including doctoral residencies, site visits, etc.). For most programs travel would not be common. Travel may involve a plane, car or metro. In accordance with ADA policies, reasonable accommodations regarding travel limitations can be provided.

  • Ability to work onsite in a Corporate or Campus location (in a typical office environment) may be required based on role.  If so, this would include being mobile within the office, including movement from floor to floor using elevators or stairs.

  • Faculty and Federal Work Study roles require access to work in a setting that enables meeting all requirements of the role (including computer, privacy, reliable internet access, phone, ability to video conference, etc.) at a remote location.

  • Must be able to meet critical thinking and problem-solving aspects aligned to job duties, as well as effectively communicating with co-workers.

  • Must be able to work more than 40 hours per week when business needs a warrant.  Accommodations related to the schedule may be considered.
