This is a highly collaborative entry level position that will work closely with O'Neill staff and faculty, as well as with other instructional designers around the university, especially in UITS Learning Technologies, eLearning Design and Services to support online course design and development. Our goal is to ensure that pedagogically appropriate IU-supported online tools are used to enhance the educational experience for our students.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Serves as course builder and resource person for the design and development of online courses within O'Neill, under the direct guidance of the Director of Online Education and in close partnership with eLearning Design and Services staff, leaning on and leveraging existing models and resources within Learning Technologies.
  • Supports multiple faculty on a variety of course design issues, including building active and engaged learning activities, implementing appropriate instructional technologies, and creating accessible materials. 
  • Follows established guidelines and standards to improve the accessibility of documents, course sites, videos and other course assets - this skill may be learned on the job.
  • Uses pre-built frameworks, templates, and prototypes for course design and different Learning Management Systems (e.g. Canvas or edX) - this skill is learned on the job. 
  • May assist in defining instructional, learning, or performance objectives. 
  • Designs and/or produces instructional materials, products, and aids for online use. 
  • Implements (and may design or propose) learning activities and supports for use in online self-paced and/or instructor-led online courses.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelors degree

Preferred

  • Coursework and/or certificate or degree in instructional or curriculum design

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • Recent relevant experience and instruction, coaching, mentoring, training, teaching, or instructional design

Preferred

  • Experience teaching or supporting at the college/university level 

SKILLS

Required

  • Experience with some online instructional technology (such as: Word, Microsoft Teams or Canvas, etc.)
  • Comfort with and interest in learning new technologies
  • Must be self-directed, organized and able to juggle competing priorities with short deadlines 
  • Interest in learning best practices and course-build techniques to ensure online courses meet accessibility requirements 
  • Ability to follow frameworks, templates, and prototypes for course design as determined by the instructional design team
  • Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of individuals in a professional environment
  • Receptive and adaptable to feedback
  • Ability to work well with others

Preferred

  • Experience working with Learning Management Systems or html a plus
  • Experience with online learning environments and emerging technologies as either an online learner or an instructor
  • Ability to provide a unique viewpoint and approaches as we create engaging, high-quality and effective online learning
  • Ability to support a variety of tasks in a distributed ( virtual / hybrid) team environment
  • Knowledge of educational theories and their application to instructional design

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate in synchronous and asynchronous environments, and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus (if hired as in-person staff). The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position is eligible for remote work, subject to change in the future based on university policy and business needs. 

Approximately 8 hours per week with option to work more if available.
