Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) OSU Press Griffis Publishing Internship for the Library at Oregon State University (OSU).
The George P. Griffis Publishing Internship at OSU Press
OSU Press is seeking a qualified and motivated undergrad or graduate student to fill our internship position. This paid internship provides an outstanding introduction to scholarly book publishing, with opportunities to gain hands-on experience in the general operations of a university publishing house and work with publishing and library professionals. The Griffis intern plays a vital role in the Press’s success and is an indispensable member of the OSU Press publishing team. The Press is based in the Valley Library at OSU’s Corvallis campus.
The Griffis intern reports to the Press’s acquisitions editor but will have opportunities to work with all Press staff and learn about marketing, production, and other aspects of publishing, and to participate in author talks, publishing industry webinars, and other related events.
OSU Press is Oregon’s oldest university press. We publish books on the Pacific Northwest, American West, and Pacific world, with a focus on history, environmental studies, natural resource management, and Indigenous studies. To learn more, visit our website at http://osupress.oregonstate.edu .
Position Duties
  • Corresponding with peer reviewers
  • Preparing manuscripts for production
  • Proofreading manuscripts under the direction of the Managing Editor
  • Drafting catalog copy, blog posts, social media posts, and other marketing materials
  • Promoting awareness of the Press within the OSU community

Related projects may be assigned as time and interest allow.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated interest in book publishing
  • Basic computer skills, including Word and Excel experience
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Meticulous attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as a strong team member
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Interest or experience in the Press’s publishing fields
  • Experience with campus or community diversity/equity/inclusion initiatives
  • Experience with Photoshop, InDesign, Drupal, or other design and web page creation software
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Position length: 10–15 hours per week; full academic year (September 2024–June 2025) required; summer hours optional; actual start and end dates are negotiable depending on the intern’s interests and schedule.
Pay rate: $15/hr
