Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Student Assistant positions with Oregon Integrated Pest Management (IPM) at Oregon State University (OSU).
The Oregon IPM Center supports the increased adoption of IPM methods of pest (insect, plant pathogen, etc.) control across Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. A large part of our program pertains to the production of outreach materials to help farmers and ranchers understand pest biology, pest impacts, and management options.
Students will assist us in developing identification and documentation guides and other IPM outreach materials. Duties may include any of the following activities: collection and pinning of insect pest species; assisting in the production of written and graphic workshop materials; performing a literature review of IPM management options. Students will also be invited to help OIPMC staff with the maintenance of living insect collections. They will additionally assist in the maintenance of research plants at OSU greenhouses, and will be required to complete the greenhouse safety training.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • The ability to closely follow directions, pay attention to detail, work independently without supervision, and communicate professionally are required.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Ideal students will have an interest in entomology, agriculture, horticulture, or education within these fields.
  • Students should be comfortable going outside in inclement weather, and be fine working with plants and living insects.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) is preferred.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • The position is 10-15 hours per week during the regular school terms. During academic breaks, the student may work up to 30 hours per week.
  • Work is mainly performed in scientific laboratory, research greenhouses, and office settings.
  • The applicant may work in environments around chemicals and pesticides.
