Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Summer Copy Editor positions for the Orange Media Network (OMN) at Oregon State University (OSU). 
The Summer Copy Editor is responsible for collaborating with the editors of all OMN publications to proofread and edit all written content for print and online.
Position Duties
Responsibilities:
  • Fact-checks, copyedits and proofreads for grammar, punctuation, spelling and AP Style all written work intended for print and/or online publication by Orange Media Network, including The Daily Barometer, Beaver’s Digest, Prism, DAMchic, blogs, Orangemedianetwork.com, marketing and/or social media posts
  • Assists in covering and copyediting breaking news and sports as needed, including nights and weekends
  • Review contributors’ notes and recordings to make necessary accuracy checks before publication
  • Attend weekly editor and redmark meetings with adviser to review and evaluate publications of The Daily Barometer
  • Attend production as deemed necessary by EIC
  • Other duties as assigned by the editor

Communication
  • Respond to emails, messages, team chats and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN
  • Ensure you are using, checking and responding to BaseCamp for project management
  • Notify adviser immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur

Leadership
  • Follow all OMN policies and procedures
  • Act in a professional manner at all times
  • Ensure designs and content are centered on equitable representation and inclusion, with attention to impact on historically excluded communities and constituencies
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Is knowledgeable in fact checking strategies
  • Knows or willing to learn AP Style and work within the SPJ Code of Ethics
  • Able to work flexible hours including nights and weekends
  • Is a strong writer, communicator and comfortable with public speaking
  • Is organized and reliable
  • Is a strong communicator and comfortable with public speaking
  • Is comfortable giving and receiving feedback
  • Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations
  • Must complete all elements on On-Boarding Curriculum
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Has been a paid OMN writer for at least one term
  • Has had prior attendance and participation in OMN Fall Training
  • Previous newspaper or media experience
  • Knowledge of AP Style
