Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill two part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) DAMchic Assistant Editor positions for the Orange Media Network (OMN) at Oregon State University (OSU). 
The DAMchic assistant editor assists the editor in chief in overseeing student-produced content for the print magazine, its website and social media channels. 
Position Duties
Responsibilities
  • Assist in curating, pitching, assigning, editing and reporting stories for DAMchic’s print, online and social media platforms 
  • Regularly update and contribute to online and social media content at least five days per week with stories, photos, interactive features including content at least twice per month that is unique to site 
  • Assist in ensuring that all students who submit articles, photos, podcasts, video and social media content receive coaching and feedback prior to publishing, so that they can improve and learn 
  • Assist in organizing and conducting three launch campaigns (fall, spring and winter terms), launch parties and outreach events 
  • Assist in planning and holding weekly meetings to assign tasks and oversee other magazine activity 
  • Assist in ensuring that all students who submit articles receive coaching and feedback prior to publishing, so they can learn and improve 
  • Assist as needed in producing print issue and ensuring properly prepared print files are sent to the commercial printer by deadline 
  • Help with magazine production and train staff members in production as needed 
  • Assist the EIC in hiring, supervising and managing a team of writers, contributing directors and volunteers in accordance with OMN policies and procedures‬‬‬‬ 
  • Other duties as assigned by the adviser or editor 

Communication 
  • Respond to emails, messages, team chats and phone calls the same day, professionally representing OMN 
  • Ensure you are using, checking and responding to project management platform (Basescamp, Discord, etc.) 
  • Work 10 regular in-office hours each week for Orange Media Network, at least half of these hours should be during regular business hours (8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday). Hours may vary during different stages of the term 
  • Notify adviser immediately should any ethical, legal, personnel or controversial problems occur

  • Ensure designs and content are centered on equitable representation and inclusion, with attention to impact on historically underrepresented and marginalized communities and constituencies 
  • Act professionally at all times 

 
Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Is knowledgeable in newsgathering, news values and fact-checking strategies  
  • Willing to learn Associated Press Style and work within the SPJ Code of Ethics 
  • Able to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and academic breaks 
  • Knowledgeable of or willing to learn page design software 
  • Is a strong writer, communicator and comfortable with public speaking 
  • Is organized and reliable 
  • Is experienced with coaching and with giving and receiving feedback 
  • Able to remain professional and calm when working with difficult individuals and situations 
  • Is knowledgeable and experienced in building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders and partners 
  • Served as a member of paid OMN staff for at least 6 months – or – as a volunteer OMN staff for at least 12 months or equivalent 
  • Must complete all elements of the On-Boarding Curriculum before beginning role 
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Had been a paid member of staff of the cohort for at least one term 
  • Had prior attendance and participation in OMN Training Camp 
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
The DAMchic Assistant Editor employment dates: 
  • Full Start: Sept. 9, 2024 to May 31, 2025 

 
Pay Rate:   
  • Full Start: 10 hours per week, $638 per month
