Job Summary

The Optometry Manager manages, coordinates, and oversees the effective operation of the general practice of the SFGH clinic through effective supervision of optometrists, hospital lab techs and administrative support staff to provide high quality patient care within the Department of Ophthalmology.

The Optometry Manager is a role model, expert clinician, leader, and mentor in clinical, professional, and administrative leadership in the department, ensuring that all optometrists, opticians, and support staff are trained and competent in the skill-sets required to provide safe patient care. The incumbent is a working Manager and is required to work clinically in direct patient care while performing administrative and leadership functions. Manages the operations of the SFGH Eye clinic or center (s) to include fiscal, human resources, and practice management operations. 

The primary clinical responsibility of this position is  the direct application of clinical expertise to patients and families being managed at the SFGH clinics.  

The primary administrative responsibilities of the Optometry Mananger covers some or all of the following budgetary funding, financial and resource projects, business plans, MOU’s, and operationalizing staffing levels, serves as a link between ZSFG Department of Ophthalmology and ZSFG Dean’s Office as well as UCSF Department of Ophthalmology regarding administrative, HR, operational and financial matters.

Supports the Chief of Ophthalmology in the supervision of Professional Fee billing.

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology is one of the leading ophthalmology departments in clinical care, training, and research nationwide. The Department of Ophthalmology is one of the largest recipients of federal grant funds among peer departments.  We are ranked 2nd in overall National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding in the country. Additionally, we have been the #1 recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness funding nationwide with nearly $1.2 million granted in a single year. Overall, the Department has a wide-ranging portfolio of 60 active research grants.

UCSF’s renowned eye care services is located in a state-of-the-art home, the Wayne and Gladys Valley Center for Vision (WGVCV). Located at UCSF's Mission Bay Campus, the center houses the Vision Clinics, where many of UCSF's eye care programs relocated, as well as research and teaching facilities. Ophthalmology conducts its patient care, teaching, research, and public service activities currently at multiple UCSF campuses: Parnassus, Mt. Zion, Veteran’s Administration Medical Center (VAMC), San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), East Bay and Benioff Children’s Hospital at Mission Bay and in Oakland. The Department sponsors numerous invited speakers, research seminars, journal clubs, as well as a postdoctoral training program focused on mentorship, networking, and recognition. The UCSF Department of Ophthalmology consists of approximately 300 full time employees (FTE’s) (including UCSF Health employees), including faculty, basic scientists, postdoctoral scholars, graduate students, residents, fellows, clinical, research and administrative staff.


Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in optometry issued by an accredited school / college of optometry and minimum of  six years of experience at least five years in a lead/supervisory role
  • Broad knowledge and skills of optometry essential to managing the clinic and associated services.
  • Strong knowledge associated with diagnosing eye diseases and various eye conditions, which may be unusual and / or complex in nature.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Skills to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Effective decision-making and project leadership skills.
  • Strong management skills. Oversight of important projects and initiatives.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Able to work in a collaborative manner with campus management, patients, staff, and faculty at all levels across campus.
  • Proven ability to organize and manage multiple priorities, and to delegate work functions efficiently.
  • Broad skills associated with managing HR and fiscal resources in a manner necessary to achieve unit objectives and goals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • DEA certification
  • BLS
  • 1 year Optometry Residency training
