Optics Scientific Engineering Associate

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Molecular Foundry is seeking an enthusiastic and skilled Optics Scientific Engineering Associate to join our team. As a Department of Energy-funded nanoscience research user facility, the Molecular Foundry provides cutting-edge expertise and instrumentation in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment to scientists worldwide. In this role, you will lead the development and oversight of the Foundry’s optical spectroscopy and microscopy capabilities, contributing to the advancement of nanomaterials characterization efforts.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop and enhance custom optical characterization methods with a focus on high spatial and temporal resolution for probing novel materials' structure and dynamics.

  • Create data acquisition, analysis, and visualization software and procedures for experimental tools, including new lasers, ultrafast streak cameras, and closed-cycle magneto-cryostats.

  • Collaborate with scientists and users to develop innovative methodologies and instrumentation.

  • Train users on standard and custom microscopy systems, assisting them in data analysis and interpretation.

  • Lead optics lab equipment and inventory maintenance, ensure lab safety, and contribute to infrastructure design.

  • Engage with vendors on service contracts and repairs to resolve technical issues promptly.

  • Coordinate scheduling with users and Foundry staff to ensure efficient facility use.

  • Share results in group meetings and actively participate in professional activities such as conferences and workshops.


What is Required:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent experience in physics, chemistry, materials science, or a related field, with expertise in optical microscopy and spectroscopy techniques.

  • Proven track record in optical spectroscopy and microscopy techniques at academic, industrial, or other research institutions.

  • Excellent communication skills, including technical writing, reporting, and effective collaboration with scientists.

  • Background in laboratory safety, particularly in laser safety, and a commitment to maintaining a positive safety culture.

  • Proficiency in programming for data analysis and experimental control.

  • Experimental experience in cryogenic and room temperature optical microscopy and spectroscopy techniques.

  • Strong knowledge of laser, electrical, cryogenic, and magnetic safety.

  • Demonstrated troubleshooting abilities for laboratory equipment.

  • Excellent analytical and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to work.

  • Experience building custom optical spectroscopy systems.

  • Proficiency in computer programming with Python (preferred), MATLAB, C, and/or other languages.

  • Familiarity with developing experimental protocols, data analysis, and visualization tools for multi-modal and multi-dimensional datasets.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Background familiarity with scanning-probe and/or electron microscopy-based techniques.

  • Chemical safety experience.

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.

  • This position is expected to pay $7,853.00 - $9,817.00/month, which fits within the full salary range of 7,853.00 - $13,254.00/month for the Sr Scientific Engineering Associate. Salary for this position will be commensurate with the final candidate’s qualification and experience, including skills, knowledge, relevant education, certifications, plus also aligned with the internal peer group.
