The Optical Engineer collaborates with OARnet staff on all aspects of maintaining and delivering services across the state’s 5,500-mile fiber-optic network backbone to support the connectivity relied upon every day by Ohio’s higher education, K-12 education, state and local government, public broadcasting, health care and research communities.

Responsibilities of the Optical Engineer include:

  • Provides consultation to OARnet member schools, affiliates and partners with optical transport technology design and configuration.

  • Responsible for designing and maintaining the network topology.

  • Provides oversight and recommendations to improve or establish more cost-effective services.

  • Responsible for creating and maintaining accurate records for installation and configuration of client equipment; responsible for overseeing OARnet client and third-party installations; ensures integrity, documentation and inventory of site and hub equipment designs and configurations.

  • Responds to escalated network problems.

  • Must be accessible via phone when not in the office and have internet access to perform certain work duties remotely.

  • Occasional travel within Ohio and occasional off-hours work required. The engineer also will be on call 24 hours per day on a rotating basis.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer and information science or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Four years of experience supporting a network service provider infrastructure.

  • End-to-end expertise in optical transport technologies including 10Gbps and 100Gbps DWDM transport.

  • Experience configuring and testing optical transport products.

  • Operate and interpret results of fiber characterization to include OTDR traces, dispersion and attenuation profile.

  • Valid driver’s license.

Desired Education/Experience:

  • Working knowledge of Cisco NCS2K platform, WSON, SSON.

  • Working knowledge of Cisco Transport Planner (CTP).

  • Two years of experience supporting and implementing optical networks.
