CDS operates four dining units (Browne Dining Hall, Red Door Marketplace, Broad Cafe, and Avery Kitchen) for a campus community of 2000. We also serve over 850 students, 7 days a week, through our Board Program and maintain a burgeoning Catering Department.
Job Summary
The Operations Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of one of six units within the Dining Services. This specific job summary pertains to the Operations Manager of the Red Door Marketplace (RDM). RDM operates 7 days a week throughout the year, with varying hours of operation during school break periods (spring, summer, winter). In this position, the candidate is responsible for employee & unit management which includes, but is not limited to, customer relations, menu development, food & beverage management, concept & unit logistics, ordering, forecasting, and sanitation & safety. The Operations Manager will create and foster a strong teamwork environment that exemplifies ownership and initiative. They will ensure that the operation is ready for service, that the staff has the tools, training and knowledge to perform their tasks as required, and that all equipment is in good operating condition. This position will be required to work varying units within Dining Services as needed for coverage and assistance.
This is an Essential Reporting position. In the event of an emergency on campus, an employee designated as essential reporting has essential job skills that are needed for response and recovery and is expected to report to Campus as soon as possible.
Essential Job Duties
- Manage, schedule, assign, train and monitor the work flow within the unit.
- Instruct employees in proper methods, techniques and procedures.
- Responsible for independently managing the unit's food cost with the ability to understand and report operational performance as needed for financial performance.
- Listen to and utilize customer feedback pertaining to menu and services.
- Ensure maximum standards of sanitation and food safety within all operating units.
- Responsible for fostering teamwork and creating lines of communication within the unit and between all units within Dining Services.
- Daily assessment of staff pertaining to customer service, teamwork, and completion of duties as required.
- Responsible for operational success of each unit: food costing, setting appropriate margins, and resolving any budgetary issues that may arise.
- Works with chefs and senior management when adjusting menu per customer feedback, sales data, trends, and seasonal offerings.
- Works with Inventory & Storeroom staff when costing out the product options with regards to price and availability.
- Cultivates a positive and productive workplace by setting an example, communication, vision, teamwork, ownership, initiative, with a can-do attitude.
- Ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory requirements; maintains maximum standards of sanitation and safety.
- Ensures employee work areas are ready for servicing customers; coordinates staffing for all workstations.
- Assists in food production, barista service, and other duties during daily meal periods.
- Able to efficiently delegate duties well in advance of service dates, to include menu, recipe, logistics, and staffing.
- Ensures that all kitchen equipment is in proper working condition.
- Effectively communicates with clear and direct instructions as to work expectations.
- Orders food for daily production based on inventory and forecasted sales.
- May work varying shifts due to unforeseen events or interdepartmental needs.
- May be required to work an extended work week, late night, and/or weekends, as needed.
- Able to listen to employee and customer feedback and concerns, with the confident ability to handle all situations appropriately with respect and understanding.
- Must be able to confront a challenge or adverse situation with calm, resolve, and an open, can-do attitude and positive mindset.
- Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years food service management experience.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Demonstrated team building ability.
- ServSafe Certification or the ability to obtain certification immediately after hire.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods at a time, move, bend, twist, lift, push, pull, squat, reach, and walk with ease, without injury, and with a sense of urgency & purpose.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

- Food & restaurant experience at a high-volume organization
