Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Operations and Instrumentation Engineer  for the Department of Psychology. This position plays an integral role in carrying out the mission of the Psychology Department by managing the engineering makerspace and assisting with faculty research. 
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Designs, drafts prototypes, and produces final builds of research apparatus based on needs of faculty and graduate students, including rodent social chambers, mazes, operant chambers, human illusion models, custom components for existing systems, and others as needed. 
  • Manages use of the makerspace with adherence to safety practices. 
  • Maintains workshop machinery, tools, and equipment and recommends new purchases and/or new technologies. 
  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains lab instrumentation currently in use.
  • Prepares shop for incoming classes of graduate students, laboratory technicians, and other researchers who will use a common area in the makerspace to design and build their own projects.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience to demonstrate a high level of general technological proficiency in order to interface with computer-based fabrication systems.
  • Requires up to two years relevant experience.
Certifications/Licenses
Preferred Qualifications
  • Entry-level design and fabrication experience with a variety of materials (i.e., wood or acrylic) and basic electronics knowledge (e.g., of commercial micro-controllers). 
  • Ability to design specialized equipment for the BSN and Cognitive areas. 
  • Willing to learn basic programming languages and use the equipment specific software such as 3D design software for additive or subtractive manufacturing techniques (CNC and/or 3D printing) and in commercial micro-controllers such as Raspberry Pi or Arduinos. 
  • Technological proficiency that would allow basic web editing is highly desired. 
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Specific knowledge should include an understanding of tools and equipment used in design and build lab such as 3D printers, routers, and basic programing. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize. 
  • Strong initiative and a high sense of responsibility, a cooperative approach to responsibilities, and sound judgment. 
  • Ability to identify non-routine issues and initiates and carry out problem solving independently with occasional review of output by supervisor and pro-actively interact with faculty, students and visitors in a professional manner with the goal of creating an outstanding service environment. 
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver’s license would be required for this position.

  • Tools and equipment found and planned for lab operations: CNC, drills, 3D printers, Arduino, commercial micro-controllers.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Travel to all RU-NB campuses. 
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs.
