We are filling two (2) positions at the following locations - You will be able to select your preferred location(s) upon application: 1 position at Kendall Creek Fish Hatchery, Deming, WA-Whatcom County And 1 position at Wallace River Hatchery, Sultan, WA-Snohomish County For more than a century, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife hatcheries have produced fish for harvest. Today, hatcheries provide the foundation for the state's popular recreational fisheries and the many jobs that depend on them These dynamic roles supervise and direct all aspects of fish production within the complex(es) of responsibility. The primary purpose is to achieve conservation and fishery enhancement objectives. Our Operations and Hatchery Reform Manager Kendall Creek Fish Hatchery Will supervise and administratively oversee operations at the Kendall Creek, Bellingham, Lake Whatcom, Samish, Baker Lake, and Marblemount. Hatchery Staff under supervisor responsibility include: 3 – HS4’s, 4 – HS3’s, 10 – HS2’s, 5 – FHT’s. Wallace River Hatchery Will supervise and administratively oversee operations at the Whitehorse Ponds, Arlington, Wallace River, Reiter Ponds, and Sunset Falls Hatchery. Hatchery Staff under supervisor responsibility include: 2 – HS4’s, 5 – HS3’s, 8 – HS2’s, 1 – FHT’s. Some of the Key Responsibilities of these roles: Provide Leadership and Supervision: Ensure that staff understands and meets goals and expectations and accepts responsibility for results. Promote cohesive, cooperative teamwork within operational guidelines. Budget Management: Ensure that budget proposals are accurate and with costs fully documented before presenting to Fish Program or funding entities. All complex facilities are operated within adopted budget allotments. Long-term, Strategic Planning: Develop strategic plans that reflect understanding/consideration for key issues and needs of constituents and the agency. Internal and External Constituent Communications: Ensure that affected parties are kept informed about agency and Fish Program goals and activities. Managing Production of the Complex: Ensures that brood documents are understood, modified as required, and complied with. Staff takes ownership for production goals and accurately communicate with the public regarding facility goals and activities. The complex meets its expected contribution to achieving agency performance measures. Operational and Administrative Compliance: Ensures that facilities operate in compliance with all permits, policies, and procedures. Facility structures meet all current and long-term operational needs. Operational rules, policies, and procedures are formulated and maintained to reflect the needs and realities of the facilities. Facilities are mechanically sound, safely operated, and aesthetically maintained within budget and other constraints. The employee working environment is safe and safety policies and remedial safety recommendations are implemented.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A degree in fish biology, fish culture or another applicable program OR 5 years of experience at an advanced senior level in: • Fish culture practices • Fish health diagnosis, treatment, and management practices • Salmonid fish culture practices • Department policies and procedures Including a minimum of 2 years of experience in the following: • Supervising hatchery staff • Working with diverse operation budgets and budget management • Negotiating hatchery budgets • Knowledge and use of federal, state, and tribal regulations. Preferred/Desired Education, Experience, and Competencies • Advanced training in fish culture from an accredited institution or university • Advanced training in fish health from an accredited institution or university • Five or more years’ experience in salmonid culture • Two or more years of experience working with diverse operation budgets and budget management • Experience developing contracts • Experience negotiating hatchery budgets • Experience maintaining working relationships with Federal, Tribal, and/or other agencies • Proficiency with computers and software including Word, Excel, and CAPS, Fishbooks (WDFW) • Knowledge of federal, state, and tribal regulations
