The BST3/RBL Operating Engineer will provide facilities operation support for the general BST3 facility, the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory (RBL), and other University facilities as directed. The incumbent will be responsible for properly operating maintaining, and repairing all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, environmental control systems, associated with the RBL. The incumbent will be required to assist in preparing and then follow all Standard Operational Procedures needed to perform all required maintenance tasks. The position will perform scheduled preventative maintenance duties as directed.

The incumbent will advise the Facilities Operations Manager and the RBL leadership of all operational procedures necessary to assure the safe and continuous operation of the RBL.  In addition the incumbent will participate and be consulted on maintaining the integrity of the RBL systems and equipment including but not limited to HEPA filters, biosafety cabinets, autoclaves, tissue digestion equipment, cage washing, and control systems.

Under the guidance of the RBL Leadership the position will be responsible for advising and participating in routine and non-routine decontamination of all RBL spaces. The incumbent will also be responsible for assisting the RBL team as required in the development of all Standard Operational Procedures related to the safe operation of the RBL including but not limited to safety, emergency response, and security plans.  

Operating Engineer will also carry out other duties as assigned.

 

Journeymen Operating Engineer with a "Class A" City of Pittsburgh Stationary Engineers License Universal CFC Certification. 

The position requires that the incumbent must successfully fulfill a confidential medical screening to determine that the individual does not have a medical condition that may place them at undue health risk by entering the RBL or that may create a medical contra-indication for any required vaccinations.

The incumbent will be required to successfully enroll in the University of Pittsburgh Animal Exposure Program, Tuberculosis Protection Program, Measles Protection Program, and other medical surveillance programs as dictated by the active research within the facility. 

The incumbent will be required to successfully complete a Department of Justice security clearance for work with Select Agents and Toxins as required by Federal Regulations.
