Columbia Law School seeks a Visiting Associate Clinical Professor or Visiting Clinical Professor to teach the Entrepreneurship and Community Development Clinic for the Spring 2025 and Fall 2025 semesters. The visitor is expected to be in residence during these semesters. This is a coverage visiting position and is not part of a search for a full time faculty member.

The Clinic is a one-semester course that introduces students to transactional lawyering. Students in the ECD Clinic provide free transactional legal services to low-income and moderate-income entrepreneurs and community-based organizations in the neighborhoods surrounding Columbia on issues relating to new and emerging businesses. Students provide these clients with essential legal counsel through a wide range of transactional legal services while also receiving the hands-on, practical experience needed to navigate the evolving fields of entrepreneurship and community development. The clinic not only promotes economic empowerment and social innovation but also contributes meaningfully to the entrepreneurial ecosystem in the New York City area.

The Visiting Associate Clinical Professor or Visiting Clinical Professor will have sole responsibility for teaching the clinic in Spring 2025 and Fall 2025 including a twice weekly seminar and regular supervision meetings with students. The candidate will also have sole responsibility for all case responsibilities during this time, including serving ongoing clients and identifying new clients. The clinic's docket includes 1) advising about entity choice and assisting with corporate formation, 2) answering employment law questions, 3) assisting with the registration of trademarks, advising on other intellectual property issues, and participating in the USPTO's law school clinic certification program 4) drafting and negotiating agreements such as leases and other contract agreements, 5) assisting with applications for tax-exemptions and 6) advising on relevant regulatory and licensing issues.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • J.D.
  • Strong academic qualifications
  • Clinical teaching experience

Preferred Qualifications:

Teaching and practice experience commensurate with level of appointment.

Salary Range:

Visiting Associate Clinical Professor: $190,000 to $230,000

Visiting Clinical Professor: $230,000 to $250,000
