Trek Curriculum: DOCS Clinical Skills Coach Job Description

All first-year students enrolled in CUSOM’s Trek curriculum will participate in weekly small group clinical skills training during their pre-clerkship year as part of the Developing Our Clinical Skills (DOCS) course. This dynamic, experiential course will produce humanistic student physicians by developing their foundational clinical and professional knowledge, skills, and attitudes via an integrated curriculum. The curriculum will emphasize communication and interpersonal skills, cultural competency, physical examination, clinical reasoning, and professional development while promoting patient-centered care, teamwork, reflection, and coach-learner partnerships. Standardized patient interactions will also comprise significant portions of the course.

Clinical Skills Coaches will facilitate a small group of eight (8) students and utilize a “coach approach” when delivering the course’s curriculum. In addition to teaching students, Clinical Skills Coaches will observe students’ clinical skills, deliver individualized feedback, evaluate student performance, and provide effective remediation.

Clinical Skills Coaches will be considered core faculty in the Trek curriculum. Core faculty influence and shape students’ learning environment as well as their professional identity formation and will be held to the highest professional standards. Although clinical skills coaching via small group facilitation during the DOCS course is the primary role of the Clinical Skills Coaches, they will also be responsible for other tasks in the curriculum (i.e., directly observe and provide feedback on students’ clinical skills during subsequent portions of the Trek curriculum, participate in competency and standard setting committees, and teach elsewhere in the Trek curriculum).

The Clinical Skills Coaches will jointly report the DOCS course directors and the Director of Clinical Sciences. This will be an at-will, part-time position associated with 0.1 FTE as compensation, tied to the NIH salary cap, and is subject to annual renewal.

There will be a total of 23 Clinical Skills Coaches for the Trek curriculum. Approximately half of the Coaches will have direct teaching and faculty development obligations Tuesday afternoons and the other half Wednesday mornings.
