About the Department
The Office of Distance Engineering Education in the College of Engineering at NC State University is the college’s outreach unit providing support for 19 online graduate master’s engineering degree programs, two site-based BSE ABET programs, three 2+2 site transfer program, and continuing professional development programs for distance students. Known as Engineering Online, this unit provides services for both faculty and students and works closely with engineering departments, other university units and representatives from the host institutions for the three site-based programs in Asheville, Havelock and Wilmington.
Many years ago the College developed site-based undergraduate programs to provide educational opportunities for individuals to earn a BS degree in their home communities and help create a stronger engineering workforce in the state. One of the oldest programs is the mechatronics engineering program in Asheville, NC. A BSE program in Mechanical Systems Engineering is offered in Havelock and a transfer 2+2 program is also available at these sites as well as on the campus of UNC Wilmington,.
The College is responsible for the administration and delivery of classes to the sites in terms of budget, technology and equipment in studio classrooms, support services for both faculty and site-based students, and supervision of the NC State employees housed at the site-based locations.
Essential Job Duties
The position will be located in Asheville.
This posting is for an open rank position. Depending on qualifications, the successful candidate will be hired at the rank of Lecturer, Sr. Lecturer, Asst. Teaching Professor, Assoc. Teaching Professor, or Teaching Professor.
This position will primarily provide instructional support for the joint Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) degree program in Mechatronics Engineering offered in partnership with the University of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA). The selected candidate will work closely with the Program Director of the Mechatronics unit, other local NC State personnel, Raleigh-based NC State faculty teaching classes in the program, and various UNCA faculty and staff assisting or supporting the engineering program.
The employee will be responsible for teaching Senior Design classes each Fall and Spring semesters and assistance in the delivery of synchronous engineering classes taught by the College of Engineering’s ECE, MAE and MSE faculty from the NC State campus in Raleigh. Such assistance will include presence during video lecture delivery, student help sessions as needed, exam proctoring, etc.
The Bachelor of Science in Engineering (BSE) is an ABET accredited degree program.
The employee will report directly to the Program Director of the Mechatronics Engineering program in Asheville.
Other Responsibilities
The employee may also be asked to teach special on site mechatronics classes as needed, assist with marketing projects, and serve as a mentor to the engineering students.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • Because the BSE is an accredited ABET program, the minimum educational requirement must be at the master’s level for the rank of Lecturer or Sr. Lecturer. 
  • To be hired at the rank of Asst./Assoc./Full Teaching Professor, or to teach courses at the graduate level, a terminal degree is required.
  • Experience in teaching or training of engineering students and/or professional engineers.
Other Required Qualifications
  • Ability to communicate clearly in both written and oral communications.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member.
  • Experience in using engineering software, such as Solid Works, MatLab, Excel, etc.
  • Proven ability to coordinate multiple projects, follow-through with projects and attention to detail.
  • Strong commitment in helping students develop skills and competencies in engineering
  • Demonstrated ability to teach engineering concepts at the undergraduate level.
  • Excellent managerial and organizational skills.
  • Strong ethical principles.
  • Ability to travel to Raleigh for occasional meetings, as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in an area of electrical engineering with experience in teaching undergraduate students or adult learners in academic or non-academic settings.
  • Employment in industry as a professional engineering or scientist.
  • FE and PE licenses in engineering would be helpful.
