The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE ) at The Ohio State University invites applications for two open rank professional practice faculty appointments beginning Fall 2024. These positions will be initially affiliated with 5G-OH, the CSE-led 5G and Broadband Connectivity Center .

Position Overview

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Ohio State is an international leader in research and education in Networking and related areas. The mission of its 5G-OH Center is to design and implement curricula and programming for Ohio’s Broadband and 5G Sector Partnership to develop a skilled broadband and 5G workforce, establishing career pathways, K-12 outreach, and forming statewide regional partnerships between education and industry providers. 5G-OH seeks to deliver curriculum (starting with for-credit certificate programs), research innovation, and workforce development solutions through their activities across Ohio State; the Center combines activities from Computer Science and Engineering Electrical Engineering , the Ohio Education Research Center , and the Center on Education and Training and Employment  to inform industry and government in the 5G/Broadband space. The Center houses the Industry Sector Partnership, a collaboration between the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation  and the Wireless Infrastructure Association . Our combined efforts in this space facilitate the 5G and Broadband build-out across Ohio, with an emphasis on bridging the digital divide.

To support these and other efforts, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering invites applicants for two professional practice (non-tenure-track) faculty positions at all ranks. We will consider all qualified applicants with expertise in networking and related areas, with particular interest in those who can teach courses on a broad range of topics including wireless networking, cellular (especially 5G), mobile and broadband communications, and internet-of-things. Successful candidates will demonstrate interest and ability to lead development of undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

The position is open to applicants who may require sponsorship for a visa or other work authorization.

Performance Objectives

  • Contribute to teaching and curriculum development activities (including online offerings) in CSE.  
  • Lead the creation of new certificates, graduate, and undergraduate programs.
  • Teach and mentor students at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
  • Lead the design and development of physical, virtual, and simulation assets for student labs.
  • Participate in outreach and engagement with industrial or government partners.
  • Participate in service to the university and the national and international academic community.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required :

  • A Ph.D. in computer science, computer engineering, or a closely related computing field.  Ph.D. must be completed by the time of appointment.
  • Potential for, or evidence of ability to teach and mentor in an inclusive way (where all learners are valued and feel a sense of belonging).
  • Excellence in verbal and written communication.

Desired :

  • Experience with developing and teaching distance-education courses and certificate programs.
  • A record of high-quality research or development, gained in academia, industry, or national labs.
  • Experience with or commitment to engagement with industrial or government partners.
  • Familiarity with open source projects and standards such as 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), Open Radio Access Network (ORAN), OpenStack, and open-source software defined network (SDN) frameworks.
  • A commitment to or demonstrated efforts in teaching, research, and/or outreach and engagement that reflect Ohio State’s Shared Values .
  • Potential for leadership in service, both to the profession and to the university.

    • A summary of teaching experience and responsibilities.
    • A reflection on teaching philosophy and goals.
    • A list of courses and/or trainings taught (including course title, date, number of students, educational background of students), each with a very short description of the course and course goals.
    • A discussion of your strategies for mentoring students with different cultural backgrounds and those belonging to groups identified by NSF as historically underrepresented in STEM . 
    • A discussion on strategies to achieve an effective learning environment for all students regardless of their backgrounds, expectations, and needs.
    • A discussion of activities undertaken to improve teaching and/or mentoring.
    • A summary of goals and plans for courses you would like to implement in our program.

  • Teaching Statement. Write 1-2 pages narrative that includes:
    • A personal vision for teaching and learning
    • A description of teaching strategies or approaches for which you received training or have implemented.
    • Justification for those strategies, highlighting how to achieve an effective learning environment for all students regardless of their backgrounds, expectations, and needs.
    • A description of the ways in which your professional experience will inform the creation of new courses, enhancement of existing courses, and other educational activities for students.
    • State mentoring skills you consider fundamental, including those necessary to effectively mentor students with different cultural backgrounds and those belonging to groups identified by NSF as historically underrepresented in STEM .

Computer Science and Engineering

One of the oldest computing programs in the country, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is a national leader in impactful computing research and education. We create, teach, and actualize the principles that connect computing and society while advancing the forefront of foundational computer science into various interdisciplinary realms. Department faculty include 56 tenure-track and 8 clinical-track faculty, with 16 ACM/IEEE Fellows and 31 CAREER Awards among past and present faculty. The department continues to raise its national and international research profile through aggressive recruiting and large-scale projects (e.g., two NSF AI Institutes and an NSF HDR Institute). The department will continue to invest in creative and team science activities leading to ever increasing strengths in both foundational and applied computer science. The department is also developing innovative academic programs with various campus partners in topics such as AI, cybersecurity, data analytics, digital health, and multimedia. CSE faculty closely collaborate with various centers on campus including the Advanced Computing Center for Arts and Design (ACCAD), the Translational Data Analytics Institute (TDAI), the Sustainability Institute (SI), and the Ohio Supercomputer Center.
