Job Summary
East Tennessee State University’s (ETSU) Department of Computing seeks candidates for an open-rank, nine-month professorship with an emphasis on Cybersecurity to meet current demand and drive future growth. A primary function of this faculty position will be to work toward establishing and directing a Cybersecurity Center or Lab within the Department of Computing.
Successful applicants will have a Ph.D. in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or a related discipline, a passion for teaching, the willingness to establish and direct a Cybersecurity Center or Lab, and the potential to achieve research excellence demonstrated by high-quality publications and grants. The successful candidate is expected to build an innovative, nationally recognized research program that contributes to ETSU’s vision of being a premier R2 research university, as well as engage in high-quality undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring. Much of this research and grant activity would be associated with the Cybersecurity Center or Lab once established. Successful applicants will also engage in service activities in the department, university, and community. Opportunities for collaboration exist across the University in the Academic Health Science Center, Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, and Business.
The Department of Computing houses four undergraduate programs—Computer Science, Cybersecurity and Modern Networks, Information Systems, and Information Technology, two graduate programs—Computer Science and Information Systems, and a Graduate Certificate in Data Analytics. The Department has more than 500 undergraduate majors, 150 graduate majors, and 25 faculty members. All in-person Computing courses are taught in the recently renovated Brinkley Center, which includes four computer labs, four lecture rooms, and two auditorium-style classrooms.
The position is contingent upon sufficient funding. The salary is based on qualifications and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Primary areas of teaching emphasis are graduate and undergraduate courses in cybersecurity. Areas of interest include the following:
  • Cybersecurity fundamentals
  • Ethical hacking
  • Computer forensics
  • Computer security laws and regulations
  • Advanced network security
  • Network defense in depth (Security layers)
  • Incident response and digital forensics
  • Risk assessments and risk management
  • Other cybersecurity topics

Candidates should also be able to establish and direct a Center for Cybersecurity within the Department of Computing. This center may have multiple components, such as a Cyber Law Enforcement lab and others, that allow collaborations with other disciplines on campus and with community partners in the region and beyond.
Candidates should be able to locate and secure funding support for Center activities.
Required Qualifications
  • A terminal degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or a related discipline completed by August 15, 2024.
  • Good written and oral English skills.
  • Able to begin work August 2024.

Candidates to be considered for academic rank higher than assistant professor must:
  • Have substantial bases of experience, including a record of teaching, research, and service that meets Department and University standards for the given rank.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior academic experience in teaching, research, and service.
  • Prior experience directing a Center or Lab.
  • Prior experience with successful grant writing.
