Job Summary
Eastern Washington University and the College of Health Science and Public Health at Eastern Washington University invite applications to fill one tenure track position in the Department of Wellness and Movement Sciences to begin September 2023. Appointment rank will be either as tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor, depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in our Bachelor of Science in Public Health program. In addition, the successful candidate will advise undergraduate public health students and will have opportunities to collaborate with our Master of Public Health program. The successful candidate will also teach other departmental courses as needed, demonstrate teaching excellence, and engage in scholarly research, professional growth, and service.
Additionally, all faculty are expected to actively participate in assessment of student learning and to engage in effective teaching.
Information about the Department
Eastern’s WAMS faculty bring knowledge and experience in teaching, research, and service to their undergraduate and graduate programs. We are especially interested in a colleague who complements our existing faculty. The department’s undergraduate programs prepare students to complete degrees in Exercise Science, Health and Physical Education, Outdoor Recreation and Leadership, Public Health, Recreation and Tourism Management, and Therapeutic Recreation. The department also offers Master of Science degrees in Athletic Training and in Wellness and Movement Sciences.

This position is located on Eastern’s residential campus in Cheney, Washington, and the successful candidate will be expected to teach and maintain regular office hours on campus.

The offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check prior to beginning employment.

Required Qualifications
  • Doctorate degree (any discipline) and master’s degree in public health
    • Will consider candidates with a master’s degree in public health who are in the process of completing a doctorate degree. The doctorate degree must be completed by Fall 2025.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively teach public health content in a classroom environment OR willingness to engage in professional development for effective teaching techniques/skills
  • Willingness to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal access, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public.

Additional required qualifications for Associate Professor rank include:
  • Six (6) or more years of successful teaching or professional experience in Public Health or closely related field

Preferred Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates who offer one or more of the following preferred qualifications:
  • Earned Doctoral degree in Public Health or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated strong teaching record at the university level.
  • Evidence of advising undergraduate and/or graduate students in academic coursework, a professional program, or an internship.
  • Evidence of scholarly activity (i.e., publications, presentations, grants) relevant to the field of public health
  • Evidence of ability to secure external funding relevant to the field of public health
  • Professional certification(s) and/or licensures relevant to public health.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with the CEPH accreditation process.

Responsibility / Duty
A Faculty Activity Plan will be developed by the end of the first quarter of the selected candidate’s appointment, and will consist of a combination of teaching, research, service and/or time to perform administrative duties, as negotiated and as needed to meet the needs of the department.
Teaching: A typical workload for this position will involve teaching 36 credits per academic year (80% of the total workload), subject to department needs. This position will teach undergraduate courses in Public Health, as well as other courses for the Department as needed.
Teaching also includes the following additional responsibilities as defined in the faculty CBA:
  • Meet all scheduled classes
  • Plan, organize and inform students of course content, texts, readings, assignments, attendance expectations and methods of evaluation including grading scales
  • Schedule and attend office hours
  • Turn in grades according to established deadlines
  • Advise students who are declared majors on department, college, and University requirements and career opportunities.

Additionally, all faculty are expected to engage in effective teaching and assessment of student learning.
