The Department of Medicine is committed to translating research discoveries into clinical practice to improve health worldwide. The Division of I&R strives to provide outstanding care for patients with autoimmune and rheumatic diseases. I&R’s clinicians and investigators are at the forefront of integrating pioneering, disease-related research into clinical practice, to provide world-class care to our patients.
Dr. Tamang’s lab develops artificial intelligence algorithms to enable new innovations in healthcare and population health. A primary area of focus is using disease activity and functional status information to better understand the causes and treatments of rheumatic diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and other chronic rheumatic disease. Integral to their work is the analysis of large and complex population-based datasets, using techniques from natural language processing, machine learning, and deep learning.
Dr. Tamang is committed to recruiting and mentoring the next generation of computational scientists in the rheumatic diseases. Access to Stanford’s scientific community and resources provides an unparalleled environment to perform high-impact translational research to advance the field of rheumatology, through applications of AI and informatics methods. For example, the Postdoctoral Scholar will have the opportunity to work directly with Dr. Robert Fairchild, a physician-scientist specializing in the diagnosis, evaluation and management of rheumatologic diseases utilizing rheumatologic ultrasonography. Dr. Fairchild is the Director of Stanford’s Rheumatology Ultrasound Diagnostic and Interventional Clinic, which he founded in 2017, and is the developer and custodian of a remarkable labeled imaging dataset that is well-positioned to support high-impact studies. The post-doctoral scholar will also have access to additional population-based medical imaging datasets that are available to Dr. Tamang and well positioned to support high-impact research studies at the intersection of AI and rheumatology.
We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Postdoctoral Scholar with a strong background in medical imaging, machine learning and deep learning to join our dynamic research team. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with Dr. Tamang and Dr. Robert Fairchild to advance the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing monitoring of patients with chronic rheumatic diseases, leveraging cutting-edge techniques in ultrasound, CT and X-ray image analysis.
Responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement computer vision algorithms for the analysis of medical images in the context of rheumatic diseases.
- Collaborate with researchers and clinicians to design and leverage medical imaging datasets for deep learning applications with the goal of understanding the epidemiology of rheumatic disease and facilitating disease diagnosis and treatment.
- Conduct thorough literature reviews to stay abreast of the latest developments in computer vision, medical imaging, and rheumatology.
- Contribute to the design and execution of experiments, ensuring rigorous and reproducible research practices.
- Analyze and interpret data and prepare findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences.
- Mentor and collaborate with students and other advanced trainees, fostering a collaborative and innovative research environment.
