Job Description:

The University at Albany has implemented a campus-wide student success model aligning current advising structures, strengthening campus coordination and collaboration, and providing holistic and personalized support for students from admission to graduation.

In furtherance of this mission, the Academic Support Center at the University at Albany is seeking innovative and student-centered Online Academic Advisors to support the University's student success model. Online Academic Advisors are responsible for providing academic advisement to fully online students from admission to graduation. This student-oriented position works closely with students to develop individual success strategies while collaborating closely with campus colleagues to identify potential academic roadblocks and engage in proactive problem-solving to address those issues.


The successful candidates must be familiar with developmental and pro-active/intrusive advising models, have a commitment to student-centered advisement, and be comfortable using information technology to assist in advisement.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Serving as a primary Academic Advisor for students enrolled in online undergraduate degree programs.
  • At all times, responsible for monitoring academic progress and communicating with the student about University requirements.
  • Responsible for coordinating a student's success team and proactively initiating intervention strategies when a student needs additional support or referral. 
  • Provide targeted and strategic interventions based on a unique understanding of the individual student. 
  • Connect with students on a regular basis to build and maintain rapport and serve as the first point of contact to ensure questions are answered and concerns are resolved. 
  • Collaborate with faculty and other University departments to enhance student success and coordinate support services.
  • Remain current on best practices in advising/retention and provide support to the University community as appropriate. 


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a College or University accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization. 
  • One year of professional experience or relevant graduate-level employment with a college student population.
  • Experience in providing academic and personal advisement or case management and outreach to support students in meeting educational or career goals, specifically with students in transition or on academic probation.
  • Strong interpersonal, writing (as assessed by application materials submitted), and oral communication skills.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and belonging relative to their role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two or more years of professional academic advising experience. 
  • Experience working with special populations including online, adult learners, transfer and/or historically excluded populations of students.
  • Proficient in Spanish or other non-English language.
  • Master's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
