Job Summary/Basic Function:

The College of Science and Environment at Lake Superior State University invites qualified applicants for a one academic year visiting assistant professor position in Environmental Science to begin August 2024. The successful candidate will provide their academic, laboratory, and professional expertise to course instruction utilizing multiple teaching formats potentially including: lecture, laboratory, team teaching, practicum and/or online/hybrid delivery. Instructional duties will include lectures and labs in Introductory Environmental Science, Environmental Systems, Environmental Law, and Environmental Health consistent with areas of interest/expertise. Assistance with preparation of course materials is available if desired. Facilities for research and instruction are state of the art and include mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS, LC-TOF, GC-MS/MS), ICP-MS/atomic emission spectroscopy, SEM-EDS, μXRF, automated nutrient analysis, etc. and a fully equipped teaching laboratory. Applicants are encouraged, but not required to involve undergraduate students in applied research activities, and opportunities to collaborate with existing faculty on ongoing research projects exist.

Lake Superior State University, located in Sault Ste. Marie, MI is a Primarily Undergraduate Institution uniquely situated on Lake Superior in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, in proximity to a wide variety of nearby field sites for class laboratory and research opportunities. The international border with Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario makes it uniquely situated for collaborations with a variety of agencies for LSSU’s many field-based programs. The two cities with a combined population of 100,000 pair the advantages of a larger city with the safety and comfort of a smaller town.

Duties and Responsibilities:

1) Twelve contract hours of instruction and other assigned responsibilities per semester.
2) Provide a minimum of five hours devoted to office hours for the purpose of student support.
3) Safely conduct and supervise field and/or laboratory procedures and experiments.
4) Course assessment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctoral degree (or ABD) in Environmental Science, Environmental Health, or Environmental Engineering or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Environmental Science, Environmental Health, or Environmental Engineering or a related field.
Experience instructing from delivery formats including classroom, online, and/or blended.
Experience facilitating applied research activities involving undergraduate students.

Physical Demands:

Typical demands of teaching at the university level exist, with the ability to stand for up to 4 hours in a single class session. The ability to manage the physical demands of 12 credits per semester, with the occasional possibility of overload and night classes.
