Scope of Job
To provide professional nursing care to oncology patients for the medical oncology and infusion department ensuring adherence to clinic, department and University policies, nursing procedures, standards, and practices.
Description of Duties
  • Plans, implements, coordinates, evaluates, and promotes the continuity of care consistent with established standards and practices.
  • Facilitates dose modification by assessing patient, assessing labs, consulting protocol or treatment plan, calculating dose, and consulting physician regarding dosage modifications, problems, and symptom management.
  • Administers all medications/blood products using correct medication/blood product, dosage/amount, route, time, and technique.
  • Initiates and performs venipuncture, accesses implanted ports and maintains central lines catheter devices.
  • Counsels/assesses health status by interviewing patient regarding current status and medical history.
  • Manages patient medication refill requests from the pharmacy telephone line and records the information in the patient chart.
  • Provides teaching and other instructional material to patient/family.
  • Delivers compassionate, evidence-based care.
  • Maintains safe working environment at all times.
  • Demonstrates professional accountability by maintaining proficient in assigned role and involvement in professional organizations.
  • Assists patients in locating available community resources.
  • Provides psychosocial support to patients and families.
  • Renders support to LVNs and medical assistants.
  • Takes patient calls as needed and document relevant information in patient’s chart.
  • Assists with establishing clinical operations and patient care.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Direct supervision of assigned staff.
Required Education
Graduate from an accredited program for professional nursing education.
Preferred Education
Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited university.
Licenses/Certifications
Current Texas Registered Nurse state license with the State Board of Nursing. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) preferred.
Required Experience
Two (2) years of nursing experience in an oncology infusion setting administering chemotherapy ONCC, chemotherapy/biotherapy course.

Equipment
Use of standard office and medical equipment.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/healthcare environment; some travel and weekend work may be required. There is a possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations, and other conditions common to an oncology/hematology clinic environment. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Must constantly consider safety risks and provide safe environment conducive to patients, visitors, and staff. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Will work from the Institute of Neuroscience temporarily in Harlingen until Cancer Center is ready in February 2025.
Other
Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards. Knowledge of oncology treatment procedures, facilities, and equipment. Ability to perform nursing assessments and patient triage. Knowledge of supportive care principles and techniques for oncology patients. Ability to educate patients and/or families as to the nature of disease and to provide instruction on proper care and treatment. Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses. Patient assessment and referral skills. Knowledge of bereavement counseling techniques. Knowledge of the nature and treatments of oncological diseases and of reactions and side effects of related therapy methods.
