Scope of Job
Responsible for the oversight of clinical operations which include delivery of radiation oncology, medical oncology and infusion therapy services, and surgical oncology. Responsible for physician and infusion template management, resource management and the delivery of patient care.
Description of Duties
  • Responsible for the management of clinical operations which includes delivery of radiation oncology, medical oncology and infusion therapy services, and surgical oncology.
  • Responsible for physician and infusion template management, resource management and the delivery of patient care.
  • Leads center efforts to operationalize goals including implementation and evaluation of outcomes.
  • Participates in the strategic planning of clinical operations.
  • Collaborates with Human Resources in the recruitment of clinical nurses and clerical staff.
  • Collaborates with nurse director and medical director regarding hiring needs and decisions.
  • Ensures respective center’s staff is appropriately cross trained by assisting in the orientation of new staff as well as precepting nurses in Radiation Oncology, Infusion Therapy and Medical Oncology, and Surgical Oncology.
  • Ensures that staff and Cancer Center operations are compliant with external regulatory agency requirements (e.g. JC, HIPAA, Magnet etc.).
  • Collaborates with medical director, and nurse director in developing and updating policies and procedures.
  • Provides oversight of the triage and coordination of patient appointments between the Cancer Center. Collaborates with the Patient Access Supervisor to ensure effective and efficient Business Center operations.
  • Facilitates dose modification by assessing patient, assessing labs, consulting protocol or treatment plan, calculating dose, and consulting physician regarding dosage modifications, problems, and symptom management.
  • Administers all medications/blood products using correct medication/blood product, dosage/amount, route, time, and technique.
  • Performs venipuncture, accesses implanted ports and maintains central lines catheter devices.
  • Triages patient phone calls as needed and documents relevant information in the patient’s chart.
  • Plans, implements, coordinates, evaluates, and promotes the continuity of care consistent with established standards and practices.
  • Demonstrates professional accountability by maintaining proficiency in assigned role and involvement in professional organizations.
  • Acts as a resource to RNs, LVNs and medical assistants.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Direct supervision of assigned staff.
Required Education
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from an accredited university.
Preferred Education
Master’s level degree from an accredited university.
Licenses/Certifications
Current State of Texas Professional Nursing License (RN). Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. 
Required Experience
Five (5) years of professional nursing oncology experience, to include one (1) year of supervisory experience in direct patient care activities.
Preferred Experience
Supervisory experience in a cancer center performing direct patient care activities. Clinical nursing experience in both medical and radiation oncology.
Equipment
Use of standard office and medical equipment.
Working Conditions
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office/healthcare environment; some travel and weekend work is required. There is a possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations and other conditions common to an oncology/hematology clinic environment. Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Must constantly consider safety risks and provide safe environment conducive to patients, visitors and staff. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley.
Other
Exceptional planning and organizational skills. Ability to maintain quality, safety, and/or infection control standards. Knowledge of oncology treatment procedures, facilities, and equipment. Ability to perform nursing assessments and patient triage. Knowledge of supportive care principles and techniques for oncology patients. Ability to educate patients and/or families as to the nature of disease and to provide instruction on proper care and treatment. Ability to maintain emotional stability to cope with human suffering, emergencies, and other stresses. Patient assessment and referral skills. Knowledge of bereavement counseling techniques. Knowledge of the nature and treatments of oncological diseases and of reactions and side effects of related therapy methods.
