Summary

The University of Michigan Detroit Center (UMDC) is a meeting and events facility established to provide space for U-M faculty, staff, students, and alumni to conduct activities in the city of Detroit. The Detroit Center catalyzes U-M engagement in Detroit and demonstrates the University's commitment to the city. The Detroit Center is a gateway for University and urban communities to mutually enrich each other through service, education, research, and cultural exchange.

The UMDC is seeking to hire a Temporary Office Assistant to help out with front desk coverage and various event activities and to fill-in during scheduled vacations.

The selected temporary employee would work approximately three days/24 hours per week (Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays). The employee must be able to get to and from Detroit, although free parking is provided at the facility.

Responsibilities*

General Office Support Responsibilities:

  • Open and close Detroit Center
  • Manage online event reservations
  • Respond to questions concerning room use and availability
  • Collect and analyze room bookings data
  • Answer phones
  • Greet visitors
  • Accept and deliver packages
  • Fill kitchen supplies
  • Fill paper in copy machine
  • Clean refrigerators and microwaves
  • Stock and organize copy room, storage room, and kitchen
  • Assist with general requests from faculty, staff, and students
  • Other duties as assigned

Event Support:

  • Set-up, coordinate, and clean-up from events, meetings or lectures
  • Interface with general public in a professional manner 
  • Communicate with featured speakers, artists, panelists, etc. concerning their needs prior to and during events

Other Duties as Assigned

While the duties are priority for this position, all staff members are expected to be available to support the effective functioning of University of Michigan Detroit Center in other ways as needed.


Required Qualifications*
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite products, including working knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Proficiency with Google Collaboration tools (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, and other shared resources)
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Demonstrated high-level interpersonal skills and strong customer service skills
  • Ability to exercise initiative, independent judgment, diplomacy, confidentiality and possess a positive service-oriented attitude

Desired Qualifications*
  • Working knowledge of applicable University policies and procedures
  • Familiarity with higher education culture, reporting structure and decision-making
  • Competency using M-Pathways or equivalent (i.e., PeopleSoft). Experience using Concur Travel and Expense system
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills

Work Locations

The University of Michigan Detroit Center is located inside the Orchestra Place Building in Midtown Detroit.


Background Screening
