The Occupational Therapist provides occupational therapy treatment to a diverse group of diagnoses including spinal cord injury, head injury, stroke, & orthopedic patients. Responsible for the evaluation & development of a comprehensive care plan for all patients. Functions within a team concept of rehab professionals. This position could be assigned to other departments within OSU.

Documents patients abilities, progress & outcomes. Provides quality services to an assigned group of patients and performs duties associated with patient care and participation in interdisciplinary teams.

Position located at University Hospitals.

Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Therapy and Licensed as a Occupational Therapist in State of Ohio.


Additional Information:

75% of the time – Clinical Practice

Clinical Practice consists of patient/family orientation, evaluations, assessments, observations, treatment procedures, training, interventions, educational sessions, and counseling conducted as part of a team approach or as a single practitioner.  The documentation of patient care and planned progression are integral components of clinical practice.

  • Both evaluation and treatment sessions may be conducted in individual sessions with one or more practitioners (i.e. co-treatment), in groups of patients with similar or diverse skill levels, or within groupings of patients who focus on individual goals but participate in care within general treatment areas, other locations within the medical center or in the community.

  • Professionals use a wide variety of approaches for evaluation and treatment, consistent with the individual needs of the persons served, their families, and caregivers.  Approaches include:  “salient factors” – those key issues that must be addressed to achieve the established discharge plan; use of clinical pathways, algorithms, and clinical guidelines; use of specific protocols to address component functions or skills established within the Rehabilitation Plan of Care (as applicable to venue of care).  Each practitioner within the patient care team is responsible for assuring a 24-hour rehabilitation environment by establishing continuity of care among team members.

  • Education/training and support sessions are as important as sessions that focus of physical or other specified skills.

  • Clinical practice for licensed professionals also includes the supervision of Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapy Assistants, and student medical assistants as assigned.  Patient care is delegated in accordance with department policy, which reflects the laws and rules of applicable state practice acts.

  • Documentation requirements and format are performed according to policies and procedures established within the Ambulatory Rehabilitation Department and follow the Standards of Practice Guidelines established by the APTA.

  • Productivity expectations are established in support of the department’s budgeted fiscal responsibility and are defined in the department’s policy and procedure manual.

  • Deliver care in accordance with the standards of practice for the Medical Center and for Rehabilitation and patients’ rights, including safety and infection control standards.
  • Demonstrate understanding of job responsibilities and uses appropriate knowledge and skills to effectively complete work.
  • Demonstrate compassion and sensitivity to patients, families, visitors and other staff.  Is courteous and responsive to others and promotes mutual respect.
  • Anticipates needs of customers and assumes responsibility for solving customer problems.
  • Demonstrates cost-effective use of supplies and maintains patient care supplies at levels that meet patient care needs.
  • Systematically organizes and prioritizes work to maximize productivity.

15% of the time – Team Activities

Team Activities are those that support care of the persons served, including scheduling, daily planning care conferences, alignment meetings/family conferences, internal continuing education sessions, team and divisional business meetings.  Team members also participate in clinical quality and outcomes management activities.  In addition, team members may have opportunities to participate in medical center committee activities and outreach opportunities. 

10% Professional Discipline Activities

It is important that in an interdisciplinary environment those rehabilitation team members maintain formal links with members of their own profession, having opportunities to pursue discipline-specific continuing education, teach students and other professional about aspects of practice, participate in research activities, and interact with members of their own profession within and outside the medical center.

All team members will establish specific goals and activities which related to their professional discipline, including in-service education and periodic discipline-specific professional business meetings’ conferences both within and outside the medical center.  Some members of the rehabilitation team may have indirect, but specific ties to a central department of the medical center, if applicable.

Practices within the Medical Center’s policies and procedures.  Adheres to the Intensive Caring Value statements as demonstrated through positive patient/guest relations, positive and effective interactions with staff, and formulating and meeting developmental goals.

Minimum Qualifications

  All Rehab Team Members must hold current licensure with the State of Ohio Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy and Athletic Training Board or the Ohio Board of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology and meet the educational and/or certification requirements established by their professions.  All academic degrees must have been granted from an accredited institution.  Current American Heart Association BLS certification preferred. 

Maintains professional licensure; demonstrates commitment to continuing education; meets mandatory education and health requirements; demonstrates competence in technical, interpersonal, and cognitive skills required to meet essential job functions.  Maintain current American Heart Association BLS certification.

Job Relationships

            Supervisory Responsibility:   Physical Therapist Assistants, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Athletic Trainers, rehabilitation aides, student medical assistants, student interns, and volunteers as assigned.

            Contacts:  Interacts daily with patients, families, caregivers, faculty members (physician and psychologists), nurses, and their support staff, other team members (inpatient and outpatient), clerical staff, managers and administrators, admissions personnel, visitors and vendors.  May interact with referral sources and payors if requested.

            Responsible to:  Rehabilitation Clinic Manager

  • Communicate, clearly with all members of the health care team, patients and families.
  • Concentrate and attend to a task or series of tasks.
  • Maintain visual attention and concentration, depth perception and visual field for patient treatment tasks and safety.
  • Identify and respond to emergency signals and indicators and respond quickly.
  • Frequently lift and support weight of 80+lbs. (i.e. transferring patients from one surface to another).
  • Frequently push or pull 80+lbs. (i.e. pushing patients in a wheelchair).
  • Frequently climb stairs or ramps with patients.
  • Frequently stoop, crouch, kneel, crawl, or stand during patient treatment.
  • Carry objects of 20lbs. or less (i.e. equipment).
  • Seize, grasp, and hold onto objects or patients.
  • Balance self and patient to prevent falls.
  • Complete documentation

Work Environment  

The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which requires normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices and meeting rooms (i.e. use of safe work practices, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations and traffic signs).
