OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST PER DIEM

Dynamic inpatient, acute care opportunity at New Mexico’s only Level 1 trauma center and the state’s premier teaching hospital. This is a rotating position within the hospital for all adult ICU and progressive care units. As a member of the UNMH occupational therapy team, you will be part of a rehab department encompassing both O.T. and P.T. You will have the opportunity to work in a variety of adult acute care units and, if desired, may rotate through the Children’s Hospital of N.M. You will work with a group of highly skilled therapists and medical teams. Educational opportunities abound. Many of our therapists also teach in the UNM Occupational Therapy and/or Physical Therapy educational programs. Experience preferred however, new grads are welcome and, if selected, will be supported with a strong mentorship program.

Position Summary:
Organize and deliver occupational therapy to facilitate rehabilitation of the physically-impaired following disease, injury, or surgical intervention. Direct patient participation in selected tasks to restore, reinforce and enhance performance; facilitate learning of skills and functions necessary for adaptation and productivity. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignment may include Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.

Detailed responsibilities:
* ASSESSMENT - Evaluate patient to determine treatment goals; outline delivery of therapy according to assessed needs
* THERAPY PLAN - Plan therapy program to include sensorimotor, educational, recreational, and social activities designed to help patients regain physical functions or to adjust to handicaps
* CONSULTATION - Consult with members of rehabilitative team in therapy delivery; consult with medical staff on patient care
* THERAPY - Select constructive therapy suited to patient needs
* EDUCATION - Educate patients on skills and techniques required for participation in therapy program; evaluate progress, attitudes and behavior as related to rehabilitative potential
* SUPPLIES & EQUIPMENT - Order supplies and equipment
* TOOLS & EQUIPMENT - Clean and repair tools and equipment
* TRAINING - Conduct or participate in training medical/nursing/ancillary personnel in occupational therapy techniques and objectives
* DEVICES - Design and fit adaptive devices for patient use
* DOCUMENTATION - Document patient care activities; process patient billing
* SUPERVISION - Supervise and instruct occupational therapy students and volunteers as delegated; delegate patient treatment responsibilities to ancillary staff as appropriate
* CUSTOMER RELATIONS - Establish and maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with patients, visitors, physicians and Hospitals employees
* DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
* PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols
* PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes
* PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk
* PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner
* PATIENT SAFETY 5 - Encourage patients to actively participate in their own care by asking questions and reporting treatment or situations that they don't understand or may "not seem right"

Credentials:

* CPR for Healthcare/BLS Prov or Prof Rescuers w/in 30 days
* NM Occupational Therapist License or Temporary License

Physical Conditions:
Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
