Job Summary
The Occupational Safety Specialist will work with labs on the University of Utah Campus to maximize efficiency, audit, and assist as needed by the manager. For further details please see job responsibilities.
Responsibilities
• Conducts safety analyses
• Interprets and applies federal, state, and local occupational safety regulations and standards
• Reviews architectural and engineering plans to ensure the health and safety of new and remodeled structures
• Implements control measures for working with hazardous equipment
• Investigates accidents to identify causes and to determine how such accidents might be prevented in the future
• Collects samples of hazardous materials and performs occupational and environmental exposure assessments
• Determines legal sufficiency of data to meet demands of regulatory record-keeping requirements
• Investigates cases of work-related injury, illness, or death
• Conducts safety training and education programs and develops presentation materials
• Prepares budget projections for the General Safety Manager
• Supervises a team of Technical Assistants
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a life science, safety engineering, or occupational safety and health related field, or equivalent experience, AND three years professional experience in occupational safety. Knowledge of government regulations, professional association recommendations, consensus standards, safety analysis, and cost control principles is also required. 
 
Experience delivering health and safety service in a higher education environment is preferred.
