Occupational Health Nurse

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has an opening for an Occupational Health Nurse to join the Health Services team. The primary focus of the role is on COVID prevention and return to work of Berkeley Lab employees, including contact tracing and other COVID-related duties. When not engaged in COVID duties, the position will provide Occupational Health nursing support directed toward conserving the health of workers and maintaining a safe and healthful environment in the workplace. You will provide appropriate treatment and testing for acute injury and illness as allowed under protocol, standardized procedures and the Nurse Practice Act. Under the general direction of the Clinical Manager, this position will work towards pre-determined goals and objectives, that include assisting in the formulation and administration of workplace wellness initiatives. 

 

What You Will Do:

• Primary responsibilities are focused on COVID prevention and Return to Work activities, including contact tracing and other COVID-related duties.
• Carry out proper treatment for acute or serious injury (e.g., injections, suture removal, dressing changes), or illness (e.g., heart attacks, seizures, fractures, concussions), as allowed under protocol and the Nurse Practice Act. Utilize professional nursing judgment to determine and arrange proper disposition of employees to a hospital, a physician, home or return to work. 
• Identify real and potential health problems and hazards at the workplace through methods, including work-site surveys, toxicological literature research, and analysis of OSHA 200 logs and accident reports. Maintain familiarity with workplace hazards, including chemical, physical and radiological hazards. 
• Assist with the formulation, administration, and documentation of health programs and standard operating procedures, such as AAAHC re-accreditation, injury prevention, injury treatment, medical surveillance, health promotion, disease management, and case management.
• Collaborate with Human Resources to adapt system-wide programs for Berkeley Lab employees. 
• Participate in peer review of clinical care and program effectiveness to ensure quality, including documenting quality improvement studies and outcomes.
• Apply knowledge of nursing principles and health program administration to provide advice and recommendations toward the formulation and/or improvement of Health Services programs.
• Attend off-site meetings to receive medical education or represent Berkeley Lab in national professional association meetings or meetings of Department of Energy (DOE) contractors.
• Provide accurate written reports to applicable standards and ensure that this information is entered into the CHESS database and EMR database
• Ensure effective liaison of the group with Human Resources staff and EH&S Division specialists in fields such as industrial hygiene, occupational safety, radiation assessment, analytical services, risk management, fire protection, and with external agencies including local public health agencies, UC, and Alta Bates/Summit Medical Center.
• Provide essential support services during localized or site wide emergencies, including those that relate directly to the health, safety, and welfare of the Lab, ensuring continuity of key operations, and maintaining and protecting Berkeley Lab properties.
• Contribute to the completion and submission of the DOE-required Performance Indicators.
• May collaborate with clinical manager, clinic and HR staff for the assessment, planning, coordination and monitoring of quality and cost effective options and services necessary to optimize the occupationally injured workers’ recovery and successful return to work.

 

What is Required:

• M.S. in Nursing and a minimum of 3 years of experience as a licensed Registered Nurse in California; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
• Demonstrated strong collaborative and administrative capabilities and demonstrated knowledge of professional nursing principles with the ability to effectively and safely collaborate with less experienced clinical staff members, as well as more experienced team members.
• Knowledge of applicable federal, State of California, and local regulations.
• Strong communication skills and ability to effectively interact with and talk to large groups of employees, including managers, to explain and answer questions about occupational health and wellness programs.
• Ability to develop a working knowledge of complex Laboratory policies and procedures, including willingness to learn and follow the clinic’s processes/practices.
• Ability to travel as needed to attend meetings, receive medical education, and/or represent Berkeley Lab.
• Ability to utilize computer programs and software to analyze, document and present data and information.
• Certification or the ability to gain certification in spirometry, audiometry, and CPR.
• Ability to lift, carry and transport up to 50 lbs.
• Evidence of immunity or declination of vaccination in accordance with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen rule.

 

Desired Qualifications:

• Knowledge of worker’s compensation laws and case management.
• Familiarity with additional occupational health fields such as industrial hygiene and occupational safety.
• Urgent care or emergency room experience.
• Certification as an occupational health nurse (COHN or COHN-S).
• Knowledge of the regulatory process and experience in monitoring regulatory developments.

 

Notes:

• This is a full-time, 2-year term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
