Summary

Second senior official responsible for: administering Michigan Medicine Nutrition Services unit operational functions within the department of Patient Food and Nutrition Services (PFANS). Oversees Nutrition Services Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNS) and Nutrition Services Managers.

Responsibilities*
  • Develop and monitor standards of nutritional care, based on evidence based practice
  • Oversee the provision of medical nutrition therapy, resulting in high value, cost effective patient care
  • Lead nutrition care components of inpatient care
  • Serve as liaison with Ambulatory Care Nutrition to provide seamless care across the continuum
  • Serve as liaison with medical and professional staff concerning nutritional care programs for inpatients and outpatients
  • Recruit, interview, hire, and facilitate training of Nutrition Services Manager.
  • Direct, coach, and mentor the Nutrition Service Managers
  • Oversee human resource management of the Nutrition Services unit, including hiring, competency assessment and documentation, disciplinary action, and performance evaluation
  • Organize and lead meetings among the Nutrition Services unit.
  • Develop, revise, implement, and monitor compliance with policies, procedures, guidelines, protocols, and forms, particularly those associated with provision of nutrition services by RDNs
  • Ensure unit compliance with regulatory agency standards including state, federal, and The Joint Commission
  • Direct the preparation of and monitor Nutrition Services’ operational budget
  • Participate in establishing departmental financial objectives
  • Strategically plan for the unit and participate in departmental strategic planning
  • Establish and integrate goals with those of the institution
  • Coordinate clinical nutrition classes and supervised clinical nutrition rotations, monitoring and planning for continuous program improvement, maintaining high level communication amongst all parties involved
  • Assure adequate communication within unit, across the department, and with other departments
  • Network with other leaders across the United States who provide nutritional care
  • Benchmark for continuous improvement
  • Ensure the most recent advancements in nutrition care are incorporated into Michigan Medicine practices and protocols
  • Pursue technological advances that enhance efficiency for the Nutrition Services unit
  • Engage staff in presenting and/or publishing articles, abstracts, or results of research studies

Required Qualifications*
  • Demonstrate competency medical nutrition therapy.
  • Communicate effectively in both written and verbal form to patients, staff, physicians, and leaders.
  • Communicate in a clear, concise and diplomatic manner both verbally and in writing.
  • Plan, organize, and direct the work of others.
  • Prioritize tasks, work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Work cooperatively with a team to accomplish organizational goals.
  • Implement critical thinking to solve problems.
  • Use technology such as handheld computers and word processing, spreadsheet, E-mail, and nutrient analysis software.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in job role to meet unit, department and organizational needs.
  • Understand and appreciate the role and interrelationship of the Nutrition Services and department operations.

Minimum Education/ Experience

  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with active registration by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR)
  • Master’s degree in nutrition, management, education, hospital administration, or related area by an accredited college or university
  • Comprehensive knowledge with experience in the application of medical nutrition therapy. Management/supervisory experience.
  • Leadership/administrative experience.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Minimum of five years work experience as an RDN
  • Specialty certifications such as:
  • Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE)
  • Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC)
  • Certified Specialist in Oncology Nutrition (CSO)
  • Certified Specialist in Renal Nutrition (CSR)
  • Certified Specialist in Pediatrics (CSP)

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
