Department Description

The Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program is supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), an agency of the US Department of Health and Human Services and is the primary federal agency for improving health care to people who are geographically isolated, economically or medically vulnerable. The UNC Department of Medicine/Division of Infectious Diseases is a fortunate recipient of these funds charged with the responsibility to provide a comprehensive system of HIV primary medical care, essential support services, and medications for low-income people living with HIV who are uninsured and underserved in our state.

Position Description

The Nutrition Specialist position serves as a Clinical Dietician and member of the Ryan White Project in the Division of Infectious Diseases in the UNC Department of Medicine. This position provides medical nutrition therapy in a patient-centered comprehensive primary care practice for HIV positive patients. The Clinical Dietitian is the nutrition expert supporting and working collaboratively with referring medical providers in a multi-disciplinary setting. The dietician will see patients referred for conditions such as obesity, hyperlipidemia and diabetes. Less often patients will be referred for malnutrition, gastrointestinal issues, cardiovascular and renal disease. The dietician will conduct nutrition assessments and develop care plans with patients to help them reach their nutrition goals. Candidates should be comfortable with utilizing behavior change models to enhance patient education and counseling. In addition, the dietician will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team for program development for the Infectious Diseases Clinic. The clinical dietician will use the Scope of Dietetics Practice Framework (SOD PF) to determine scope of practice, establishes Standards of Practice evidence based practice protocols/nutrition practice guidelines to help determine nutrition intervention. The clinical dietician will exhibit core behaviors and responsibilities of the department and organization; e.g., customer service, communication, patient and employee safety, ethics and professionalism, initiative and adaptation, stewardship, and teamwork.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in foods and nutrition dietetics or public health nutrition; or completion of an ADA Dietetic internship with ADA Commission. Eligibility for Dietetic Registration preferred. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

Ability to recommend modifications to guidelines with limited technical oversight, compile and organize data and assist in preparation of reports, develop comprehensive nutritional assessments, care plans and dietary instructions for patients, deveop and adapt nutritional care plans and treatment programs as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Registered Dietitian (RD) by The Commission of Dietetic Registration (CDR)
Licensed as a Dietitian/Nutritionist (LDN) by the North Carolina Board of Dietetics and Nutrition. (Certain positions may allow licensure to be obtained within one (1) month from date of hire). Certification in area of specialty (e.g., CDE, CNSC, CNSD, CSR, CSP, CSSD, CSGN, CLE, BCLE, etc.) or advanced degree or approved to practice in specialized roles where certification does not exist.
Prefer prior experience working with patients living with HIV and comorbid conditions.
