Brief Position Overview
Montana State University Extension, through a partnership with and funding from the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP), serves individuals and families with low- income, the primary audiences being parents and caregivers with the responsibility of feeding young children, youth, and pregnant teens or young adults who may become parents. The EFNEP Extension Nutrition Educator’s main function is to partner and collaborate with local agencies, schools, and organizations to implement the EFNEP program in Missoula County. The Extension Educator will teach youth and adults about nutrition, physical activity, food resource management, and food safety, using a series of approved lessons. Position specific training and orientation will be provided to the successful candidate to prepare them to carry out job responsibilities in the communities served.

General Statement
MSU Extension’s mission is to improve the lives of Montana citizens by providing unbiased, research-based education and information that integrates learning, discovery and engagement to strengthen the social, economic and environmental well-being of individuals, families, and communities.
The purpose of MSU Extension’s Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is to assist families with low income in acquiring the knowledge and skills to improve in four core areas:
  • Diet quality and physical activity
  • Food resource management
  • Food safety
  • Food security

This position provides a key role in implementing the EFNEP program in Missoula County.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Recruit and teach adults with young children the series of 9 nutrition classes which includes food preparation, discussion on nutrition, food safety, and physical activity.
  • Recruit and teach youth classes in eligible schools including teaching in the 1st, 3rd, and 5th grades, and teaching teens with nutrition and physical activity as a part of each lesson.
  • Travel to schools and other sites throughout the Missoula area to teach programs and perform related duties.
  • Office duties include data entry, collecting and organizing evaluation data, accurate record keeping and monthly reports.

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Combination of education and/or applicable experience; High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated experience working with individuals with low income and/or diverse audiences or equivalent demonstrated understanding of the EFNEP-eligible population.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate youth and adults in group settings and online and to share knowledge of food preparation, exercise, and nutrition.
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology (computer and programs) to accurately input data and establish and maintain records and reports.
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Demonstrated ability in motivating adults and children to participate in learning new knowledge and skills.
  • Demonstrated familiarity and knowledge of programs such as SNAP, Head Start, WIC, FDPIR, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess participant needs and responses and to adjust lessons to the audience.
  • Lived experience with issues such as food insecurity or poverty.

    Position Special Requirements/Additional Information
    The person in this position must be willing to travel for the annual program conference and training.

    Must possess currently or be eligible to obtain a valid State of Montana Driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record (less than 12 points), or have other reliable means of transportation. Must have access to a vehicle to use for work (mileage will be reimbursed), and have minimum vehicle liability insurance. Do NOT send a copy of the driver’s license.
