Scope of Position
The Nursing Program Coordinator in the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard G. Solove Research Institute reports to the Associate Director, Patient Education. The person in this position will be responsible for the initiation, planning, execution, and evaluation of consumer health education projects for both ambulatory and inpatient areas.
Position Summary
The Nursing Program Coordinator is responsible for the planning, initiation, organization, execution, and evaluation of education programs and learning activities designed to assist patients and family members to become knowledgeable, effective participants in their health care. Building and managing project teams and ensuring quality control throughout a project lifecycle are central to this position. The Nursing Program Coordinator develops, directs and coordinates competing demands of scope, schedule, cost, risk, quality, benefits, and differing stakeholder requirements and expectations. The Nursing Program Coordinator is responsible for major areas of patient/family/caregiver educational programming related to cancer treatment, prevention, screening, follow-up, and long-term survivorship, as well as other related health conditions. This position provides cancer-related consultation for resources and support. The Nursing Program Coordinator incorporates broad knowledge and skill in clinical care (especially oncology), health education, adult learning principles and methodology, and project management. Projects can range in timeline and may include a variety of media formats (print and video). The person in this position serves as consultant and resource specialist to nursing and other James Hospital and Research Institute staff and associated areas. This person must adhere to and understand all required regulations and standards of patient education necessary to operate within a hospital setting.
The Nursing program Coordinator must possess leadership skills, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, the ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and the capacity to work independently.
Minimum Education Required
Bachelors degree in nursing required (masters preferred).
Required Qualifications
Previous experience with patient educational programming, progressive experience in leadership and collaborative work with multi-disciplines in a health care setting. Knowledge of adult learning principles, plain language writing, health literacy, and demonstrated skills in project management.
Duties and Responsibilities
85% Initiate, plan, execute and evaluate consumer health education projects for The James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute
- Manage project development from initiation to closure.
- Work with project sponsor and stakeholders to complete project charter outlining scope, goals, deliverables, required resources, budgeting and timing.
- Complete work breakdown structure to estimate effort required for each task.
- Provide a project schedule to identify when each task will be performed.
- Determine resource requirements of project based on project specifications.
- Clearly communicate expectations to team members and stakeholders.
- Resolve any issues and solve problems throughout project life cycle.
- Manage project budget.
- Effectively manage project scope by ensuring any changes are documented and approved.
- Determine if external consultants/contractors are required to complete project plan. If required, recruit and manage appropriate staffing resources.
- Develop tools and best practices for project management execution.
- Track and report on project milestones.
- Lead, coach and motivate project team members on proactive basis.
- Determine how results will be measured and complete post-project evaluation to assess how well results were achieved.
- Ensure all project documents are safely archived following project completion.
- Participate in initiatives to address equity access as it relates to patient education.
- Serve as the clinical resource for the patient education team.
- Provide educational consults, as needed, for patients and caregivers.
10% Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute staff/affiliates and external consultants/contractors required to complete a project plan; serves as a resource and/or consultant for patient/family education.
- Collaborate with administrative, clinical, and educational staff.
- Create strong business partnerships with other stakeholders within the organization and external consultants/contractors.
- Attend meetings, conferences, seminars; participates on planning committees.
- Initiate, participate in and promote performance improvement, evaluation and research activities related to patient/family education.
- Adhere to customer services standards; maintain a positive attitude and flexible approach in response to change or unexpected issues.
5% Participates in other necessary department activities.
- Participates in establishing departmental goals, evaluating achievements and quality monitoring.
- Submits administrative reports as needed.
- Assists with development and maintenance of department budget.
- Contributes in all ways where teamwork is necessary to achieve department goals.
