Job Description:

The Academic Support Center and the School of Public Health at the University at Albany is seeking an Academic Advisor to oversee advisement services for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Allied Health majors. The Academic Advisor provides support to Nursing/Allied Health students with respect to academic planning, programming, and course selection. The successful candidate will aid students in planning their academic careers, interpreting academic rules and regulations, and ensuring prerequisites or course requirements are met. The successful candidate must have a commitment to student-centered advisement and be comfortable using technology to assist in advisement.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversee advisements for all undergraduate Nursing majors (and a select population of allied health majors), including reviewing degree audits, recommending courses, and helping to keep students on track for timely degree completion.
  • Assist in academic planning to conform to students' abilities and interests.
  • Convey and interpret the University's academic rules and regulations, academic prerequisites, programs, majors, and courses of study.
  • Refer students to related support offices within the University (Learning Commons, Counseling and Psychological Services, Career and Professional Development, etc.) as appropriate.
  • Work in close consultation with the Director of Academic Advising and the Director of the Nursing Program, providing feedback on student enrollment needs.
  • Help to organize events relevant to the undergraduate program, such as commencement, student recruitment events and open houses.
  • Attend meetings and events pertinent to the undergraduate program such as Open Houses, summer transfer planning conferences, and honors program events.
  • Coordinate transfer advisement to facilitate the smooth transfer of students to the University.
  • Update Four Year Course Plans as necessary, in consultation with the Academic Support Center.
  • Utilize appropriate advising technology (PeopleSoft, EAB, DARS).

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Nursing major representative for college and university committees regarding advisement.


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization.
  • One-year professional experience or relevant graduate-level employment with a college student population.
  • Academic advising experience, specifically with Nursing students or Pre-Health students.
  • Demonstrated superior interpersonal, written (as assessed by the application materials submitted), and oral communication skills.
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to develop inclusive and equitable relationships within our diverse campus community
  • Applicants must demonstrate an ability to support diversity, equity, access, inclusion and belonging relative to their role

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree from a college or university accredited by a U.S. Department of Education or internationally recognized accrediting organization
  • Demonstrated public speaking experience
  • Experience with Advising Technologies (DARS, PeopleSoft, EAB Navigate)
