ABOUT THE JOB 


MU Health Care is seeking a Nurse Supervisor for the Operating Room Specialty Team who will be responsible for optimizing available resources while independently collaborating, assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating the care of the surgical patient. Provides leadership, oversight, clinical expertise, and functional direction to members of specialty surgical teams to achieve optimal patient outcomes in complex specialty cases. Provides quality care to patients and works with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure the highest patient satisfaction. In partnership with the management team, ensure that clinical staff members meet and sustain departmental goals, performance expectations, core values, and outcomes aligned with the MU Health Care Mission and Goals.

DETAILED JOB DESCRIPTION 


  • Coordinate, facilitate, and manage change efforts for specialty areas including instrumentation, sterile processing, equipment, material management and vendors, and case card management. 
  • Serves as the clinical resource and point of contact for specialty service surgeons for coordinating and planning advanced procedures including specific equipment and instrumentation requests.
  • Assess, develop, plan, implement, and evaluate projects for specialty service including creating and managing detailed proposals for a project, research-evidence-based data, and improvement of patient care.
  • Negotiate and collaborate with stakeholders (surgeons, administration, and staff).
  • Facilitate a consultative role to serve as a resource to staff for equipment, procedures, and staffing within the specialty area.
  • Mentor and coach others to improve performance, enhance skills and develop career opportunities including conflict resolution and counseling techniques.
  • Maintain current knowledge of educational principles within the surgical services specialty area.
  • Educate and teach concepts, skills, equipment, and processes in specialty areas utilizing relevant technology. 
  • Provide direct care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care to an assigned group of patients.
  • Maintains the standards of nursing care and implements the policies and procedures of the hospital and assigned nursing department.
  • Plan, direct, and participate in education of the patient, family, community, and health professionals. Participate in nursing research, meetings, in-services, and quality and performance improvement groups. Perform the responsibilities of an Operation Room RN as needed. 
  • Serve as a professional leadership role model, resource, and coach to nursing staff providing ongoing support for professional development, adherence to patient and family-centered care, and quality outcomes.
  • Support the OR manager and co-management team through activities including hiring, staff development, evaluation of staff competencies, employee engagement, and staff coaching. Systematically review and document staff work-in-progress to ascertain expectations and clinical competencies. Complete monthly rounding and quarterly GROW discussions with staff members. 
  • Develop, coordinate, and maintain daily staffing schedules to ensure the appropriate level of unit coverage and continuity of care. 
  • Monitor time and attendance in alignment with MU Health Care policies and practices, ensuring accuracy of records and timely submittal/approval for payroll purposes. 
  • May complete unit/department specific duties as outlined in department documents. 

 

Qualifications

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 


  • Missouri Board of Nursing RN or Nurse Licensure Compact multi-state RN. When primary state of residency changes, compact state RNs must apply under new state of residency within thirty (30) days.
  • One (1) year of operating room or surgery RN experience. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 


  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. Certified Nurse Operating Room (CNOR) certification by the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI).
  • Supervisory experience. Additional license/certification requirements as determined by the hiring department. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 


The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met with or without reasonable accommodation. The performance of these physical demands is an essential function of the job. This position is very active and requires ambulating, reaching, and moving objects weighing up to and over 20 lbs. This role also routinely comes into contact with patients who may have contagious illnesses. This position is in a health care facility open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rotating shifts as well as holiday and work during inclement weather will be required.
