Organizational Unit Overview
The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University (ECU) is composed of 18 departments which function to: 1) provide health care for the citizens of eastern North Carolina; 2) educate primary care physicians to meet the health care needs of eastern North Carolina; and 3) make medical education available to minority and disadvantaged people. The Department of Cardiovascular Sciences (herein referred to as Cardiovascular Sciences or CVS) is the university’s newest department, and is a primary contributor to the School’s mission of medical education, patient care, research, and community service.
Playing an important role in the Brody School of Medicine’s academic group practice, the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences consists of the Department Chairman, two Medical Directors of Clinical Services, four leadership core units (Department Administrator, CVS Operations Committee/Section Chiefs, Nurse Administrator, and Vice Chairman and Director of Research), and seven clinical and educational divisions. The primary roles of education (students, residents, fellows and continuing medical education), clinical services (Structural Heart Disease, Electrophysiology & Arrhythmias, Heart Failure, Primary and Secondary Prevention, and Vascular Diseases), research (clinical and basic bench research in cardiovascular clinical care, clinical trials to develop new treatments for cardiovascular disease, educational programs for local, regional, and national health care providers, and wellness and prevention programs), academic affairs/faculty development, and administration (business and clinical support services) are led by the Department Chairman and CVS Operations Committee.
The clinical sections represented in Cardiovascular Diseases include: Structural Heart Disease, Electrophysiology & Arrhythmias, Heart Failure, Primary and Secondary Prevention, and Vascular Diseases. There are currently 30 MD and PhD faculty members, 16 Fellows, 2 Residents and 8 Physician Extenders and Cardiovascular Sciences Technicians.
A clinical, administrative, and research support staff numbering nearly 100 CSS and SPA employees provides support to the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences’ faculty and learner groups. There are 15 Subspecialty fellows (fully trained internists receiving training in a clinical subspecialty within Cardiovascular Sciences).
The majority of the department’s educational, clinical and research activities take place within the context of the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine and the University Health Systems of Eastern North Carolina-Pitt County. The central component of the medical center will be the new East Carolina Heart Institute (ECHI). Designed to be a world-class cardiovascular destination offering state-of-the-art medical technology, education, and research in one location, the East Carolina Heart Institute is composed of three main partners ECU Health Medical Center, East Carolina University, and private practice practitioners. Job Duties
This position will provide patient care for the Thoracic Surgery clinic.
Duties of this position include but are not limited to: Manages comprehensive nursing care for patients (within specialty area) whose needs range from uncomplicated to complex and rapidly changing; Based on the holistic assessment, identifies relevant aspects of the situation and determines the appropriate course of action to move patient/family and staff towards the optimal health; Assesses subtle changes in patient status; Anticipates problems before they occur and implements measures to minimize risk; Organizes and prioritizes nursing care activities considering the needs of the patients and other staff members; Provides leadership to develop, analyze, integrate complex data, and update individualized care; Negotiates short/long term goals with the patient to develop and evaluate the individualized care when applicable; Initiates/facilitates/collaborates with all members of the interdisciplinary team to improve care delivered to the patients, ensuring that appropriate referrals (interdisciplinary and community) are made and completed; Utilizes the nursing process to facilitate the patient’s care using time and resources efficiently, and assumes accountability for re-evaluating care and its effectiveness; Coordinates care with the interdisciplinary members consistent with roles and responsibilities; Designs, implements and evaluates a comprehensive, culturally sensitive, patient/family education plan; Uses professional judgment to appropriately delegate; Makes age-appropriate interventions based on individual patient needs; Determines health needs of the clinics population; Recommends behavioral changes, teaches skill, recommends medication adjustments and reports to physicians; Demonstrates a caring, compassionate approach to patient/family, functioning as a patient/family advocate; Safely performs technical skills in area of practice; Demonstrates practice based on knowledge of polices, procedures, nursing standards, and legal issues in areas of specialty; Coordinates and manages care by applying analytical reasoning, reflection, rational problem-solving skills, using evidence-based information and clinical judgment; Participates in patient care conferences communicating the individual patients progress toward optimal level of health; Participates in shared decision making and problem solving to promote effective collaboration with interdisciplinary team; Serves as a clinical resource to other staff members and learners; Use established outcome measures to evaluate effectiveness of care; Promotes effective and efficient use of educational resources; Collaborate with the Social Workers and other care providers to monitor, evaluate and trend patient responses to treatments; Manages resources to promote achievement of the best clinical outcomes that are targeted to the specific patient population; Assumes personal responsibility for quality patient care, environment and professional development; Identifies own learning needs and seeks out resources to meet those needs; Attends national and regional conferences and networks with local organizations to maintain current expertise in specialty; Shares knowledge with others to improve patient care and to contribute to overall clinic functions; Assist in the orientation of new staff members and students; Develops objectives for self and colleagues for professional development through continued evaluation of practice and by discussion with appropriate individuals; Demonstrates the insight and self-awareness necessary to recognize own impact on others and to change behavior accordingly; Accepts constructive feedback and uses it to improve performance; Demonstrates effective use of computer-based information for decision support, continuous quality improvement and professional development; Actively and effectively assumes leadership role in clinic and in the community; Demonstrates high standards of patient care and is a role model for others; Delegates appropriately to others.

Minimum Education/Experience
Graduation from state-accredited school of registered nursing and two years of nursing experience, with at least one year in the assigned specialty area. Must have a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
