Organizational Unit Overview | The East Carolina University, School of Medicine, Pediatric Outpatient Clinic provides outpatient medical care for children from birth to age 21. The clinic staff assists clients in obtaining diagnosis and treatment for acute and chronic illnesses as well as provides nursing care. Staff provides health education and access to information to enhance client health and to prevent illness. Staff provides for client comfort and safety while endeavoring to be as cost effective to keep medical costs down. The Pediatric Clinics are a service component of the Department of Pediatrics in the School of Medicine. These clinics are involved in the treatment of patients as a function of the training and education of medical students, physicians and allied health personnel in primary medical care on a regional consultative basis for eastern North Carolina. |
Job Duties | The Department of Pediatrics seeks a Nurse Specialist to provide direct patient care and case management for the Pediatric Cardiology Section. The selected candidate will be able to act independently, be self-motivated, and problem solve tactfully and diplomatically. The employee is self-directed and utilizes critical thinking skills, communicates effectively orally and in writing, possesses and demonstrates leadership qualities, and is able to perform many tasks simultaneously. Duties of the position include prioritizing clinical situations; ensuring orders are written and carried out in an expeditious manner; providing nursing input into patient care; and facilitating communication between the specialty and ancillary departments and staff, making appropriate referrals as needed. A positive approach in a team environment and the ability to interact with residents, medical students, nursing students, and other learners on a daily basis is necessary to teach procedures and concepts that relate to nursing practice. In addition, the employee will serve as an educator for the patient population and other family members regarding preventative health measures, disease, and disease management. Currently, hours of clinic operation are from 8:00am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday, with a rotating scheduled late day to cover patient care. CLINICAL SUPPORT POSITION – NOT SUBJECT TO STATE PERSONNEL ACT. The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University is affiliated with ECU Health Medical Center, which serves as its teaching hospital, as well as the flagship hospital for ECU Health. Employment in this position provides eligibility to participate in the UNC Optional Retirement Program (ORP) which offers matching employer contributions and employee control of investment choices, along with eligibility to participate in various Voluntary Supplemental Retirement Plans (401k, 403b. 457). This position is not eligible to participate in the NC Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System (TSERS). Additionally, this position offers multiple voluntary options for Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance as well as various supplemental plans including Critical Illness, Flexible Spending Accounts, Cancer, and Disability. |
Minimum Education/Experience | Graduation from state-accredited school of registered nursing and two years of nursing experience, with at least one year in the assigned specialty area. Must have a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
