The Nurse Specialist assesses a healthcare facility's nursing practice and its impact on patient outcomes. Moreover, the incumbent provides direction to nursing staff in the delivery of patient care programs, and acts as a change agent, mentor, and leader. An employee in this position ensures nursing staff sustain an established level of competency.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Collaborates with other team of experts to outline best treatment for patients. Performs holistic evaluation of specialty population, making use of enhanced proven techniques and procedures to achieve better results.

  • Implements the improvement of patient care, and healthcare policies and resources.

  • Mentors other healthcare professionals by functioning as a preceptor or coordinating preceptors for visiting professionals, students, new graduates, and orienteers.

  • Maintains professional knowledge by affiliating with professional and technical organizations, and participating in applicable continuing education programs, conferences, seminars, and workshops.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                         

Education:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Valid Florida RN license

Certification in relevant specialty or field 

RN, CPR

Experience:

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience 

Experience in Hematology/Oncology with Bone Marrow Transplant experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

·      Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships

·      Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form

·      Skill in collecting, organizing and analyzing data

·      Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office)

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

  • Participates as a member of a patient management team comprised of BMT coordinators, Data Managers, staff nurses and ARNPs assigned to BMT patients, Hematology/Oncology fellows and Hem/Onc attendings. This will include but not limited to weekly BMT team meetings.

  • Should be responsible for interacting with the NMDP (The National Marrow Donor Program) in order to secure the acquisition of stem cell products for transplant patients. He/She should have the ability to search the registry for unrelated donors, and be able to initiate testing of appropriate donors. It is expected that once a donor is identified that the nurse specialist will work with the NMDP to acquire the stem cell product for the patient. This will involve familiarity with the NMDP computer software.

  • Should be capable of securing financial clearance for transplant patients. This will involve working with the financial case managers to supply pertinent medical information and to communicate directly with insurance companies when clinical clarifications and or updates are necessary.

  • Will coordinate and participate in patient and family education and training pre-BMT regarding the transplant process. Will attend the monthly Meet and Greet Meetings when assigned.

  • Will assess the need for social services and make the appropriate referrals.

  • Will see all new BMT consults at scheduled clinic time and collect demographic data to be entered in the BMT Database within 2 working days of seeing the patient.  This will then prompt the Financial Case Manager to begin the process of insurance clearance for the proposed transplant.

  • Will follow up with all pre-BMT patients in clinic or via phone call on a regular basis to assess the patient’s current condition and update the BMT team when necessary, and to inform the patient of the progress being made to regarding the transplant process.

  • Will ensure that appropriate pre-BMT testing is completed in a timely manner. Will review the results and alert the attending MD of any abnormalities.

  • Will work with the apheresis and inpatient staff regarding scheduling admissions. 

  • Will coordinate testing of family donors for allogeneic transplant. Will ensure that the pre-donation testing is completed and coordination of the stem cell collection by the family donor is scheduled.

  • Will create an organized shadow chart for all patients undergoing transplant as outlined by the coordinating staff. He/She will also be expected to provide a copy of the pertinent information to the inpatient staff when the patient is admitted for transplant.

  • Will assist with executing research protocols when necessary (e.g. consenting patients). Will be expected to be CITI certified.

  • Will assist with the preparation of audits by outside regulating agencies.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned and requested.
